It usually depends on how many times you have ridden and how well you know the officer.
Sometimes I get to run plates on the computer. Or write up a ticket. Mostly I just enjoy myself and stay out of the officers way.
Every time has been a blast so far.

We can ride only twice a month. However, I had my advisor contact some other area departments who occasionally let me ride.
Normally, officers let you get out of the car on anything but calls that involve weapons. If the situation gets bad, the officer will tell us to take the squad to a certain location and wait. Be careful what you say to the officer. Sometimes they get ****y and make you sit at the station with the rookies and listen to them babble for a while.. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif
My advisor is extremely nice, and let's me ride whenever I want, but that's only due to the fact I work very hard with the post.
As for what we are allowed to do on a ride-along it depends on one variable, the officer, some officers love your involvement, others like you to stay put,its a judgement call you have to make.I follow this hard fast rule no matter what never get out of the car or touch any equipment until the officer specifically tells you to do so.
Stay safe folks

My post is TRYING to get a ride along program started. But first we need to get first aid/CPR certification. Unfortunately, EMS and the Fire Dept. have not gotten back with us about a certifivation class. Until then, we're going to have to wait on the ride alongs.

Last time I rode I rode w/ a new guy and he was awesome he let me do the MDT and run people on the radio which was nice 'cause I was a little radio shy http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif I also like it when the officer lets you help w/ reports, it intresting to see the way its done.
Question though, I love to ride, but I really don't wanna get on peoples nerves how many times to ride a month on average??
Thanks

I think the ride alongs are awesome. Theres nothing like a front row seat to learn about how suspects will act under different circumstances.
Sounds like all you exporers' are having a great time with ride alongs and other work.
My home town/county SO had an exporer post back in the late 70's and early 80's but then had to drop the program due to lack of funding when the buget was reduced. City and County took a large hit with the industial crash of oil and coal.
However, I was able to work as a "work study" student with the PD and SO through our high schools senior work study program. It was a great time. Worked admin, patrol for both city county, jail, courts, dispatch, and in investigations. All around training! Also had opportunity to ride with the Wyoming Highway Patrol, which is not something that a student or other "outsiders" get to do.
Keep up your hard work and interests in the c.j. system.
