This is not too much learning oriented but I just want to post something, seeing as theres not much activity here. Heres the question.
What is everybodys favorite cop movie?
HEAT with De Niro, Kilmer and Pacino. A good mix of five-o and the criminals.

I have to agree with 720 on that one. Heat was a truly awesome movie, I have probably watched it at least 20 times and can sit through it 20 more times. DeNiro made that movie!
Now as far as technical accuracy goes Lethal Weapon was the best as far as depicting the real day to day life of a cop.

Colors. Getting to be a little dated, but good. It's not a cop movie, per se, but my favorite with a kick a** cop is Smokey and the Bandit!

Not strictly speaking cop movies, but "The Peacemaker" and "Executive Decision" would be on my list. "Speed" is another good one, with fairly accurate technical detail (OK, OK, most of us don't climb in and out of speeding buses and meet Sandra Bullock, but the movie had weapons and gear down right).
Since we're talking entertainment rather than training, "Bad Boys" and "National Lampoon's Loaded Weapon" are on the list.
I would also second "Heat", "Colors", and "The Negotiator". "Metro", by the way had one of the truest lines I've ever heard in a movie when Murphy tells his partner, "SWAT is a life-saving organization."
Be safe.

Colors was a great movie and probably one of the more realistic police movies around. I would also agree on Heat and add LA Confidential, In the Line of Fire, and The Fugitive to my list of favorite law enforcement movies.
When it comes to unrealistic cop movies there are tons of great movies
Yeah, I completely forgot about COLORS... I love that movie, probably one of my Top 10 movies I have ever seen.
Heat is at the top of my list as well. Also worth watching was the "Homicide" movie, which was more of a 2 hour series finale but still excellent work.
First two Lethal Weapon movies weren't bad, #3 and #4 started getting a little stupid.

Not that they are very realistic but I love the Dirty Harry movies. Every cops fantasy! :D

I love the part where Harry tells the boss his badge is a 'seven point suppository'.

LA Confidential: Good ol' fashioned policing!
Colors: Excellent portrayal of an LAPD gang unit. Of course, it was filmed well before Rodney King and the Rampart scandal.
Internal Affairs: While not very realistic in its portrayal of cops, it contains my favorite line (uttered by Richard Gere): "Of course you can trust me. I'm a cop." :D

I would agree with everyone about Heat. That was a great movie. Colors was one of my first pulls into wanting to be a LEO. In regards to Tv shows...Homicide was a great show. Also, there was a "Cops" type show, but it was in LA strictly. I can't remember the name..."Life on the Streets" maybe. It gave a more realistic view as compared to "Cops."

I would also have to include Die Hard, Die Harder, and Die Hard with a Vengence.

I must say Police Academy and this movie called cops from the 1920s!
I'm suprised no one has mentioned The French Connection. I've you haven't seen it, watch it as it is excellent.
