Nylon or leather? I personally carry two sets of cuffs; one in a bikini case on the front weak side, the other on a handcuff strap right rear. The theory being that no matter what side you happen to be rolling around on the ground on, you can get to at least one set of cuffs. I tried the double cuff case back when we had leather; we switched to the nylon this year, but I like the system I have now, so I kept it.
I also carry a set of Big Brutus cuffs in my bag in the car for the big boys. I also carry a set of leg irons and a waist chain personally purchased) in the trunk, a hold over from my days in corrections. Some folks just cannot have enough restraints on them. Better to have that stuff available if needed than need it and not have it.

I've used several kinds in my career and frankly, there wasn't a nickles worth of difference in them. Cuff cases are pretty basic stuff.

Currently, I use an Uncle Mikes double cuff case. I prefer nylon rigs.

I thought that the Safariland holder, made with the Safarilaminate, fell apart awful quick for as much as they costs, as did all the Safarilaminate stuff I had. I will say that I was working on an island at the time and the salt air may have had something to do with it.

I like my nylon, but any of them do the same job. The big difference is snap or velcro. I like the velcro.

I don't have the experience to say which is better, but I will say why I carry my cuffs in a full case instead of a strap... the few times I have been called upon to do a building search or set-up for a felony arrest, all the other officers with the cuffs on a strap scrambled to stuff the cuffs in their pockets, since they make too much noise.
Now, they do make straps that keep the cuffs exposed but keep them silent too, this may be the bikini strap mentioned previously. I personally like this, and probably will be upgrading to with soon.

Hope this helps.

tcsd: I don't much like the idea of bare cuffs on a strap in the back. In a struggle, you run the risk of having the cuffs open and jab you in the kidney. I think it was Calibre Press that ran a line about that - one officer had a career ending injury from that.

All my gear is leather and I wear two pairs of cuffs in the back. (I know that's not the best either, but with all the other crap I wear, I don't have any other place to put them!) I like the open top case the best. It keeps the cuffs secure, but readily available.

Actually, I just went to the CP Seminar again in SEpt, and as I recall, it was a set of cuffs worn over the spine that did that guy in; mine are more to the side right behind the gun. But thanks. I've thought about getting another bikini case or open top case, but there just isn't room on the belt anymore, and I definetely want two sets of cuffs.

I like the full closure with snap case. I always carried two sets, one behind the holster on my right, and one behind the OC holder on my left. As has been already mentioned, it can be very handy to be able to quickly and easily get to cuffs on either side.

And I like leather. I firmly believe that God intended peace officers to wear leather rigs! I also believe He intended sap pockets to be used for what He designed them for! http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Ya know, this is a great question to make it look like somebody cares about equipment and duty gear, so I will lock it here and move it there. Post any replies in that forum.
Thanx

I like the open top cases.
BG's like to break bad when they know they are going to jail. Even if you have them turned around so they can't see you reach for your cuffs, they hear that tell tale little 'snick' of the velcro tab coming off your cuff case and sometimes the chase is on. They also add to the bulk and weight a bit.

I tried the little bikini snap kind, but they were a pain to get re-snapped and I finally settled for the open topped. I have never had a problem with them falling out during a chase or fight and they are easy to get in and out.

I carried two pair. One over eack kindney AWAY from the small of my back!! Carry them as far towards the outside as you can.

I don't like the double cuff cases myself. They are just plain too thick for me, and i like to spread the weight out around the belt as much as is practical.

I have seen alot of the "newer" guys wearing a pair on their front. This seems to work weel for them as they are really easy to access when you need them, but I'm really used to having them in back.

Some guys really like the strap that lets them dangle down in back. I didn't particularly care for this. It was uncomfortable for me sitting in the car for a long time on patrol.

Bottom line is that you may end up spending some money on different styles until you find what you really like. That's what I had to do.

I wish that Bianchi (or someone) would make a nylon open top. THAT would be nice.

Hope the feedback helps!!!

Sparky, Safariland makes an open top nylon case (product 4265).

I'll have to weigh in with two sets of cuffs, positioned to the rear of the expandable baton holder (strong side) and the rear of the flashlight ring (support side). I favor snaps.

Be safe.

I carry the Safariland double cuff case when in leather gear. It's a closed top case with hidden snap. It rides on the front right side of my belt, forward of my weapon.

I carry two pair, on either side of my glove pouch(which pads the spine), in Aker open top cases with pull-thru snaps. Very compact, comfortable, and accessible with either hand.

tcsd,
Ditto on the river belt! I'll never wear a Santa Claus belt again. Mine's Safariland(found it nearly new for $15). When I wear it out I'll replace with Don Hume.

For all you folks that carry the double cuffs: Make sure you have them positioned to where you are not spending your shift leaning back on them. It WILL create back problems on down the road!

I'm with Sotex and Don on this one. I carry two pairs of Smith&Wesson blued cuffs in Gould&goodrich open top basketweave cases positioned on each side of my glove pouch which is in line with my spine.

Don my first duty rig was the gould and goodrich nylon, I think it was the Pheonix Series, it took me about a week to realize that it sucked. I switched to basketweave and havent looked back since. http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I hated the nylon rig my 2nd dept. issued. Slipping my personal basketweave duty rig on at 3rd dept. was a little slice of heaven.

A "Santa Claus" belt, Sotex? You mean the old Sam Browne, with the glow in the dark buckle? All a dirtbag has to do is aim about 3 inches lower? http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I carry my old trusty S&W cuffs(made back in the days when S&W made REAL handcuffs), and my Peerless linked(for those big bruisers). I carry the S&W in a full covered velcro case, and the Peerless in an open top pinch style case.

Basketweave all the way! And like you, Don, I don't have sap pockets in my pants to carry bubble gum in!
