I placed around 160 out of 5,144 testers on this test. I was wondering about the chances of me getting hired before the test expires. I notice they still have around 10,000 applicants from tests in the previous two years waiting to be appointed. Would all of those applicants need to be appointed before I would be?

They usually take applicants from the most recent exam.
But with the state as screwed up as it is, it is unknown what their hiring procedure will be.

I scored a 90 on the 4/4/09 exam. Not only does the NYS DOCS have about 10,000 applicants from the last few exams that have not been appointed yet, they have more than enough applicants out of that 10,000 that have already completed the entire hiring process to fill the next several academy classes with. As of right now, I would not plan on receiving a canvass letter anytime soon. However there have been rumors posted on here that the next academy class will be in late October 2009 and that they may begin running academy classes regularly again after that.

This is a very misleading/confusing statement. What do you mean? People from April, 2009 would be hired before people from October, 2007? Namely, ME? That can't be correct.

I still say something is going to happen only I have no idea when or how it will affect hiring by the state. The simple fact is that the state has expanded the age limit for shock eligible inmates up to 50 years of age and since the shock facilities are at or near to full capacity they are going to be have to place them somewhere.
I don't see any new facility construction happening with the financial woes that Albany cries about but instead of closing some of these annnexes what I do see as a possibility is some of the slated closures being converted to shock use. Maybe I am completely wrong but it doesn't make much sense to expand the age limit and then have no facility to place these inmates in. Then again....this is the State so nothing they do would really surprise me........

More to the point......convicts within 3 years to their CR can apply for Shock. As it looks now they aren't standing in line to do so. There are over 2400 eligible to do so.

49.
Yes, already incarcerated convicts can now apply. This is new and was enacted by the recent budget laws.
To wit:
"Shock Incarceration is now open to inmates up to and including 49 years of age. Also, an otherwise eligible non-violent inmate can now be selected from a general confinement facility when, in the case of an indeterminate sentence, the inmate is within three years of parole eligibility; and in the case of an inmate serving a drug determinate sentence, when the inmate is within three years of conditional release."

For those applicants waiting for future academies. This is incorrect information being posted here. I verified it today with the Employee Investigations Unit. They go in order from the oldest current test to the newest. October 2007 testers will be next in the academy. After they finish off the last few from April 2007.

Now how can they be taking applicants from two different exams?

I appears that things have changed since you got hired decades ago. Here is how it works now, according to the E.I.U.: They hire EVERYONE from the score range 100-70 from every test in chronological order.
That means, everyone from April 2007 with a test score higher than 70 will go to the academy. Then they move on, in order of score, to the October 2007 test. Everyone with a 100-70 score gets hired. Then the move on to April 2008..... So on, so on. This is directly from the E.I.U.

Maybe I am completely confused on NY's ***-backwards hiring processes. Any insight form a knowledgeable source is appreciated. Here is my question:
October of 2007's civil service test is test #24826. I scored a 90, was canvassed, completed the ENTIRE hiring process (medical, psych, background, everything!) spending over $1000 on plane tickets and what not at the time when I lived in Florida. Does that mean that if and when the test expires, they will drop everyone from October 2007 and say: "Oh well, sorry man, none of you will be hired. We are moving onto April 2008."?????? I apologize but this is extremely aggravating!

I can tell that the oldest test out there for COs is April 2007, but my civil service sources say that it will be expiring in the next few months if not sooner.
I can tell you that the last academy appointments were done off of three different tests.
I can also tell you that civil service dictates a “one in three” method whereby the employer must hire one out of the top three candidates reachable on the list.

From the New York State Department of Civil Service Website . . .
"8700110 - Correction Officer Trainee List Title Area Grade Type Start Date End Date
24751 Correction Officer Trainee STATEWIDE NS Open-Competitive 06/19/2007 06/19/2011
24825 Correction Officer Trainee STATEWIDE NS Open-Competitive 01/28/2008 01/28/2012
24997 Correction Officer Trainee STATEWIDE NS Open-Competitive 06/30/2008 06/30/2012
25103 Correction Officer Trainee STATEWIDE NS Open-Competitive 01/29/2009 01/29/2013
25168 Correction Officer Trainee STATEWIDE NS Open-Competitive 07/28/2009 07/28/2013"
The first date after each test number is when the test became active and the second date is when the test will expire. Also, I maye be wrong but I believe the Department of Civil Service is in control of when a list expires, not the NYS DOCS. However, even if that is true, which tests applicants are actually selected from for appointment after a certain amount of time may be up to NYS DOCS.

This is my point a little. Why would they give another test (the one I took), when they already have 10,000 names on 4 different lists and they really aren't hiring anyone? The pay is also not so great that it would be worth 4 years to wait for the job, but I took the test to plant a seed for the future. NY State is weird in the way it hires. It seems its local governments are even weirder in hiring for civil service positions. You need to be a resident of said county or city 30-60 days BEFORE the test. Most other places just have a residency requirement after you are hired, that is why I wasn't able to take the Albany PD test or the Albany County Sheriffs test.

Hello Everyone!! I just joined the site.
I received my exams results on Friday July 31, 2009.
25-169 - Correction Officer Trainee Spanish Language - Rank #4 - Score - 90%
25-168 - Correction Officer Trainee (English Language) - Rank #163 Score 90%
What I would like to know form those already employed by NYS DOCS or have useful information is: What are the next steps? What exactly does the physical agility test consist of? Is it true that one has to go away tot he academy and that its in Albany? How long is the training at the academy? What happens once yore in the academy? Just to make it easier, what is the complete process once one receives their score.
I thank you in advance for your assistance and replies. Blessings!!

Nope, none of the above tests include the Spanish speaking ones. That is a separate list. But, its the same people on both lists! You can be considered for one or both but not Spanish separately.
And, Valentin brought up a good point though.
The Spanish speakers are considered on two lists. I am on both test #24826 (Spanish) and #24825 (Regular)...
Here is an academy YouTube Video, Valentin
NYSDOCS Academy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5UOgof8TDA)
It is 2 months long. The following step in the hiring process is a full medical and background check/interview, a battery of psych tests and a psychological evaluation. Then you wait a few years.

The hardest part of the whole agility test was stepping up and down on that little stool for about 2 or 3 minutes but that was easy enough. And the medical was hard for me because It took me 3 hours to drive up there and they wanted a urine sample so I had to hold it and it took them another 2 and half hours before they actually took it. For a minute I thought they were going to get it off of the floor. :)

A couple of years ago someone from a college presented a program at one of the EAs that allowed you to transfer the credits with their curriculum. I think they even gave credits for years on the job. And discounts if you enrolled through them. I want to say John Jay but I'm not sure. If you go back thru the past EA minutes you might find out more.
