Just curious, what are the laws/rules in regards to a MOS residing within the 5borroughs owning a long gun (sks/ak/ar15 or a shotgun ). What are the procedures one would have to follow if such a weapon was purchased?

I have no idea, that's why I'm asking...

Thanks

IIRC, assault rifles are banned in NYC. Shotguns/Rifles are good to go, just need to be put on your 10-card. If you live in long island, you can purchase an assault rifle... that's the only thing i can think of.

The only guns that go on your 10 card are handguns.......they dont need to be informed of rifles and shotguns

Buy all the shotguns/long guns you wish. As long as they do not fall under the guidlines of an assault weapon, you are good.

Really? I'm not doubting you, but I recall in the academy I had to give the serial numbers to my longarms to the department.

And technically, you didn't have to give the serials then, either. They try to intimidate/cajole/trick you into thinking that you have to give them the serials and surrender your long guns to get hired, but this is absolutely not true. Handguns, yes. Long guns, no.

Just to clarify, this is for NYC POLICE OFFICERS only, as far as I know. Peace officers in NYC have to be licensed for long guns. Correct me if I am wrong about this. And your right about the academy, as I was forced to sell a rifle when I was hired, only to find out later that it wasnt necessary.

WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL...

The whole peace officer thing is a limbo, but according to the CPL, it looks like its OK. It just depends on who interprets it.

I have an excerpt from my academy training that states that peace officers are exempt, HOWEVER I would be great if someone could elaborate. Anyone know where I could start looking. I'd like to get my longarms back without having to file for a permit if possible. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

All NYS Peace Officer are exempt from shotgun, rifle and (handgun)* only if carry on badge: permit laws. As long as you have a current Peace Officer status, you are exempt are per NYSPL 265.20 and 400. Once your retire or get suspened or terminated you have to sell long gun or move the a better part of NYS.

According to the Penal Law, Peace Officers (with the exception of some) do not need a permit for longarms. HOWEVER, NYC has this little thing called the Administrative Code. I highly recommend you read the firearms section and you make your decision.

NYC sucks. As LEO If you want to enjoy firearm ownership, I suggest you move to LI (suffolk county)or westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rocklnad counties, while still working for NYC LE agency. Like seriouly who could live without a AR-15 or AK-47 or a shotgun that holds more than 4 shells or a rifle that holds more than 5 rounds.
