Hi all, I'm hoping you can give me some advice, my husband is a Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps whose EAS is in 2 years, with 13 years in at that time. Well, he really wants to join a MA police force- Boston ideally, but we've been told there's no hope of that happening with the residency requirement and budget cuts.... Well, I was hoping you'd be able to offer some advice on the best way to make this happen!

TIA!

First off thank you and your husband for your (yes both of you) service.

The bad news: The state of Assachusetts, as I'm sure you're aware of if you live here, is in a bad way economically wise. The liar Patrick and his liberal ilk in office are anti-police and are cutting us off at the knees everywhere we turn. The percentages of pd's hiring are extremely small. The ones that are tend to be small towns with the usual political bs ensuing. Larger pds are on hiring freezes or have layed off (my pd layed off a recruit class after they graduated). The state would also rather pay the non working floaters on welfare than the cops, so they're getting rid of the Quinn Bill (police educational incentive) and details. Some pd's (Fall River for ex) have even voted to take pay cuts just to save a couple jobs.
In short, unless you absolutely have to live in this godforbidden state, don't. Educate yourself on some of the laws recently enacted and you'll realize how our legislators think. My advice is to look elsewhere.

The good news: Your husband's ETS is 2 years off. Although highly unlikely, matters can change and improve.

Deuce could not have said it better MIA, god bless both of you, unfortunately in this great state we are laying police officers off along with firefighters. I was one of the officers who were laid off. When officers are laid off they get put on a "reinstatement list" . Last time I checked there were 122 state wide that were on the list... meaning that if any civil service department is looking to hire officers they must hire off of the laid off list before they put any civilians in a class. The towns seem to be doing the best at this moment, I myslef was recently picked up by a town after being laid off since feb. Good luck to the both of you and as Deuce mentioned, you never know what can happen in two years.

Deuce and I work for 2 very large departments that many would love to work for. However even with amount of time on the job we have invested there are more pay and personnel cuts coming. He and I both have been considering leaving this state even though things haven't hit us yet. FL, AZ, TX, and many other states haven't slowed down hiring.

I also work in MA but for a small department. The above posters are correct. MA is becoming a difficult place to work. Many of the benefits we enjoyed such as the Quinn Bill and details are gradually going away. This has a tremendous impact on salary which in the case of the Quinn Bill has an impact on retirement.

We are not hiring either. We have a hiring process but have been told no new hires. We currently have a solid number of officers but I worry for the new guys. The budget was cut to the bone to make ends meet this year. Hopefully next year is better. On a better note, our administration has done an excellent job at balancing the budget to keep officers we have. I would not want to be looking for a police job nor would I want to be the junior man on a department at this point. At some point we are going to pull out of this mess. I just dont know when that will be.

Look to the south for a police job. Many people are fleeing to the Carolinas for work. There are plenty of departments around this great nation its just finding the right one.

Stay clear of MA!

We're still hiring in Nevada, although at a slower pace than years past.Las Vegas Metro, North Las Vegas PD, Henderson PD, and Nevada Highway Patrol are all still hiring periodically.Good Luck.
