NEW YORK - Police say a New York City officer was injured and his leg amputated after he was struck by a car while making an arrest.
Eric Grimes is recovering at a Brooklyn hospital after the accident Tuesday night in Brooklyn. The narcotics officer was arresting a suspect when two vehicles collided on the street, and one jumped the curb, striking Grimes.
Police say no criminality is suspected in the accident.
Grimes has been on the job five and a half years.
Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly visited him in the hospital Tuesday and they talked about his desire to stay with the NYPD.
Another officer whose leg was amputated in 2006 also visited Grimes. Officer Rachid Ekadi (Ra-SHEED' Elk-a-DI') was able to return to full duty with the use of a prosthesis.
