Does anyone know what peace officer training consists of?

Basically the same training police officers go through. A major difference is the minimum amount of training required by the state. Police officers must go through at least 635 hours of basic training. Full time peace officers must go through at least 35 hours of basic training, and part time peace officers must go through at least 10 hours of basic training.

Remember, this is just the minimum required to get certified as a full time or part time peace officer. Most agencies put their officers through A LOT more training than the minimum required. But I definitely agree that the state needs to update and increase the minimum required training for peace officers.

635 basic training includes PT, scenarios and what not.

Total waste of time in my opinion.

Anyway, the 40 hour training for peace officers are strictly book training. Nothing less, nothing more.

In a standard nypd academy, it is straight up for the first 3 months.. book learning. Aprox 2.5 hours of book learning per day.. about 45minutes MAX on LAWS and CPL procedures.

The other hour and change are spend on NYPD procedures and whatnot.

So if you break it down... 45minutes * 60 days = 45 hours of law study.

Not so much of a difference if you are looking into strictly law study between the two training sessions.

You can't really say that 635 for a police officer is "basically the same" as 10 or 35 for a peace officer.

For part time peace officers, the minimum requirement is 10 hours. 5 hours on penal law and 5 hours on criminal procedure law.

For full time peace officers, it's a minimum of 35 hours:

3 Hours Penal Law Article 35 – Justification-Use of Force/Deadly Physical Force
1 Hour Penal Law §265.20 Power of a Peace Officer to possess a firearm not owned by the peace officer
3 Hours Penal Law Articles relating to the agency's specific mission (must be specifically identified in the curriculum)
2 Hours Criminal Procedure Law §2.20 - Powers of a Peace Officer
2 Hours Laws of Arrest
1 Hour Search and Seizure
2 Hours Rules of Evidence
1 Hour Accusatory Instruments
1 Hour Court Structure and Procedure

As stated earlier, those are the minimum training requirements to become a sworn peace officer in New York State. I do not know of any agencies that simply provide their officers with the minimum amount of training. For example, Correction Officers with the New York State Department Of Correctional Services are required to attend and complete an 8 week training academy (320 hours of training.). Also, Court Officers with the New York State Unified Court System are required to attend and complete a 14 week training academy (560 hours of training.). In New York State, Correction Officers and Court Officers have full time armed peace officer status while they are both on and off duty.

NYS CPL 2.30 specifically talks about the training requirements for peace officers.

Usually 40 hours for basic peace officer course and additional 47 hours for the firearms portion. This doesn't include defensive tactics, baton or OC spray training.

Mine was 16 days, 8 hours a day at the county sheriff's academy.
