Is there some type of transition for out-of-state LEO's that move to NY? I haven searched and haven't found much of anything, so I'm guessing I am looking in the wrong locations. Any help would be great..

THANKS!!!

The above link really only applies to your certification as a police officer. You still have to sit for the civil service exams and get your name on the lists. Residency requirements are dependent on the agency you are applying to. And many agencies will still require you to go through the academy regardless of whether or not you were certified in another state and can take the equivalency course.

To the best of my knowledge, not 100% though, you have to take the civil service exam and wait for a department to contact you to start the application process. The civil service exam is a written exam and then if you pass that you get sent for a PT exam (was 1.5 miles in 12:32, 29 pushups and 38 situps in a minute I believe) I took it a couple years ago and if I remember correctly you had to be a NY resident to take it but I'm not sure on that.

NYPD will make you go through the Academy, I had a cop from Alabama and one from Delaware in my company both had over 2 years experience. Ny is wierd anyway, alot of agencies w/in the state will make you do an Academy over even if you were a cop in NY already.

If you haven't seen it yet, check out the document published by the NYS Department of Criminal Justice Services entitled "Understanding the Appointment Process for Police Officers (http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us/ops/docs/other/other_pubs/police.pdf)." Different agencies may have slightly different requirements, but the document is a good overall guide.

NYPD and NYSP will make you go through their academy. Many other agencies will allow you to skip the academy if you are already certfied police officer in NYS.

I'm not aware of anyone getting an abbreviated academy for out-of-state laterals, as happens in some other states. It may occur, I'm just not aware of it.
