Rochester police gain ground in reducing homicides
CLAUDIA VARGAS • STAFF WRITER • JULY 13, 2009
For many people, July is the time for grilling, going to the lake or relaxing with a cold beverage. But for Rochester police officers, July is a time for violence.
The number of shooting victims in the city has peaked in July for the last nine years. Each year the police department tries to have interagency programs overlap in the summer months in an attempt to decrease the number of homicides or people getting seriously hurt by gunshot wounds.
But Chief David T. Moore said he is confident that his department is ready to maintain a stable environment this month and the rest of the summer. The past six months have proven that the department's tactics are working in quelling crime, Moore said.
The number of homicides in the first six months of the year was 12, compared with 16 in the same period in 2008 and 27 in the first six months of 2007. The current year figure represents a 25 percent decline over 2008. There's been one homicide so far in July, bringing the total for the year to 13.
