I'm considering it, but want to know if #1 it's a worthwhile endeavor, #2 if you took it, what was your experiences with it and did it help you get a paying job, and #3 how much did it cost you?

I know a kid who went through it in Rockland at the community college and was already enrolled in it before he got his results back for the Rockland County Police Exam. He didn't do well on the Rockland County exam so basically he is **** out of luck.

A person I went to high school with completed this course through Ulster County Community College. After he graduated, he was hired as a part time police officer with a village police department in Orange County. The PD he was hired by paid for him to complete the second half of the police academy (Firearms, Defensive Tactics, OC Spray etc.). I have heard that alot of the town and village police departments in Orange County and Ulster County hire people that have completed that program as part time cops. Since he was only hired as a part time police officer, he did not have to be on the applicable civil service list. You can work part time until you take the civil service exam and try to get an appointment as a full time officer. It will make you very attractive to police departments looking to hire full time officers because you have already completed the police academy, which will save the department money in having to sponser you through an academy themselves.

A kid that went to my school did the pre-employment portion and got hired as a part-timer. I'd say that it can definitely help your chances with many departments, especially the small ones looking to save a buck. If you can get sponsored to do the second part, you'd be desirable to many departments as long as your background is decent... however, nothing overcomes a terrible background.

i cant say i could ever go through the academy as pre-employment. its gotta be tough knowing everyone else is getting paid to be there and they are paying to be there. they also garnish little respect among the sworn officers and are constantly reminded that they are not sworn officers. its not the greatest 5 months but i think in the long run, if you have a fairly decent spot on a list already its a great advantage to have over the next guy.

Many of my academy classmates were pre-employment. Half had jobs before the academy was even over. It does seem that many go to part-time agencies right after Phase II and then are picked up by full time agencies.
