I know there has been previous threads on this subject - but every few weeks I learn of a new DPS down in NYC. Just wondering if anyone had a list of them, that hire "Special Patrolmen" that are Peace Officers while on duty, but citizens when off. So far I know of 3:

Co-op City DPS
Starett City DPS
Sea Gate DPS

Are there others?

So what we have so far is those listed below. It seems they all deploy Peace Officers while on duty. Are there any others that people know about? Links to information are great - this way we can have ONE post that keeps going about these Departments, so people don't keep asking!

Co-op City DPS
Hunts Point DPS
Morningside Heights Public Safety
Parkchester South Public Safety
Roosevelt Island Public Safety
Sea Gate DPS
Spring Creek Towers DPS (Starrett City)
Stuyvesant Town Patrolman

You can add in the theater district security. They are armed and patrol with a cushman with red and yellow lights. use the generic special patrolman patch.

Theater District are NOT armed. I believe they are SHUBERT SECURITY. Although they do have arrest powers, I have yet to hear of it being used.

Roger that, that Sea Gate is a Police Department. I attempted to inquire as to hiring procedures, and they wanted me to stop by their office 8-( That's not something I can drive 400 miles to do! Does anyone know if any of these departments hire part time, or are they strictly full time?

NYCTNT
07-14-2009, 11:34 PM
For the most part, they are FULL TIME, ALTHOUGH I know that SEAGATE has hired PART TIME in the past.

They are not a true POLICE DEPARTMENT.

They are still PEACE OFFICERS/SPECIAL PATROLMEN.

"If someone calls 911 who shows up?"

I am familiar with several of these organizations, such as CO-Op City and Parkchester (who are among the larger ones). These depts do not answer 911 calls and are not part of the 911 system. they may monitor NYPD division radios, but they do not answer to 911. If you called 911, NYPD would be responsible for the call.
These depts may show up if it is their property, but the call is NYPD.

Well, we just have to figure whpo is hiring now.

I looked into parkchester I believe. When I spoke to them, even with five years of LE, they said I had to worked as an unarmed security guard before you get your peace officer status. So that's a no go - I'd rather not wste two more years of my life.

Roosevelt Island - sent in a resume but never heard back.

The first I've heard of the others.

The Hunts Point thing looks interesting - and they've a nice car - but the actual website has zero information nor even a contact number. So I'm at a loss as to how to inquire.

Thanks for the info. No pension, no night diff., starting pay of $29,000. I don't think so. It doesn't look like a bad gig if you're young without a family though.

NYCTNT

I think starting pay has increases and the top pay has increased as well.

401k. Pension was siezed and non existant due to an old clause that prohibited them from obtaining a full state pension while being incorporated into a union. They have been batteling this for a while now.

Excellent dental, medical and other benefits though.

PS: Dont even bother with Hunts Point. They are not hiring and probably are not going to hire for a long while.

CO-OP CITY is not going to hire until at least September.

I know Starret City was on a hiring freeze. A call to their public safety office stated that they will hand out an application and whatever happens, happens. So my guess is that they are not ACTIVELY hiring, but if need be, they will hire someone if they need someone.

Stuy town/ petercooper village works closely with the resident pct and has PD issued radios and are raised on the air from time to time as stuy town portable and do handle jobs on the property for PD if they're busy but most of the time the sector takes a ride over. They also process their own collars at the pct and I think train at the academy at night

Last time I was at Stuy Town, they were basically plain jane security guards with someeeee supervisors who were peace officers.

This was only about a year ago.. who knows what changed since then.

almost all of them were special patrolman up until a few months ago when the management started laying guys off and hiring more "plain janes" to save money i would guess. all the supervisors are still peace officers

They do not have "full" police powers. In NYS only persons designated as "Police officers" have "full" police powers. Hunts Point are Peace Officers in NYS.(They probably have Police powers only when on duty and on their property)

As far as carrying, they can carry if they have a permit, they cannot carry on the shield alone.

Her?

There is no female director.

I believe the chief has a female officer who answers phones for him, but shes in no way is in charge.

A guy in HR that I know said they wont be hiring for a while when I first posted. Something about waiting upon the new "tax hike" to kick in for revenue or some sort. I am not into numbers lingo but all I understood was they were waiting for some more moolah to get more officers hired.

You can petition NY DCJS to waive security training... it's only 24 hours total. With an out of state POST cert you should be able to get that waived. Security officers in NY have no more arrest powers than a private citizens.

Considering the salary they are paying, I do not think that they expect many people to move to NYC to take the job. It is mainly an entry level job. They may get someone to move from NJ, that is about it.
