I got some good advice here when I first posted my duty-gear-for-girls woes. The holster I had settled on is a Safariland 6285, with the belt drop, it's the leather one with rotating hood.
Well, what arrived is the new version with the "Universal Belt Loop" (what they don't tell you is you have to order/pay for the different backs in order to change them... I had visions of being able to change the positions by the screws or somthing) The UBL is not as nice a jacket slot as the old 6280. But, it's not bad. Still an inch higher than ideal for me... I think I'm going to see if the local leather guy can make a back based on the pattern of it. Safariland quickly sent me out some spacers, just on an email request for help, got 'em within a week of the request. I really can't tell a difference though...
I practiced quite a bit with the rotating hood, still wasn't sure how I'd do with it.
Well, I qualified yesterday, just fine, thank you very much. The only problem I had with draw was that I need to silicone the inside of the holster because the gun is grabbing. Retention is just right--any looser and it'd be too loose, but instrutor recommended to spray it with silicone. (BTW--would love to hear what you use for that...) By the end of qualifying was even pretty comfortable with the height of it for drawing.
I did find I was just as fast with the hood as previously with the thumb snap. Maybe a *hair* slower, but really, not noticeable. It became very instinctive after just a few excercises.
just thought I'd update for anyone else who was looking at this type of holster. I'm pretty pleased that it's a good compromise for safety/retention and draw.
