Does anyone here that has been accepted into the academy have a prior bankruptcy? Is so, when was the bankruptcy filed? What information did the PD require from you?
You may send me a private message or just reply to this. Whichever you prefer. I would greatly appreciate any information.
My bankruptcy should be completed by Oct. 09 and I am trying for the January 10' (if there is one) academy. I don't know if that would hurt my chances or if I should delay it longer. Currently I have my case withdrawn for financial reasons but have decided that bankruptcy is my best choice.
Thank you in advance.

Bankruptcy will be a big issue, it will probably disqualify you from being hired.

Listen bro it isn't that bad as how these guys are making it out to be, it depends on why u filed bankuptcy, was it because of job loss? Or irresponsiblity? Or identity theft? Your BI will take all those things into consideration as long as u are honest in your explanation.
Before I get on my job I had a judgement filed against me for an unpaid credit card, I mentioned it in my investigation packet and provided receipts of repayment to the creditor.
Here I am, so it all depends

Thank you. I know that they take people with bankruptcies because I have a cousin that just got on, but she filed hers about 4 years ago. My BI knows my credit situation and I told her that I may choose that option and she said that was okay, but that I couldn't file while in the hiring process. So I withdrew my case and will be filing this month. I just don't know when it would be safe to reopen. If I should let some time go by first or as long as it's final it doesn't matter.

Nah don't file for bankurptcy just get a copies of your credit report and the numbers to the creditors that u owe and try to work out an agreement to repay them and clean up yor credit it shows that you are attempting to repay and looks good on you.

Yes, PAPD is right, that is the better option.

I cannot deny that would look better but I don't have the money to do that or I would have already. I've been on unemplyment for the last 2 years (extentions) and don't make much, barely enough to survive. Unfortunately that's not really an option for me. I collevt from NC and their maxis $230 and I live in NY now so you know the inflation here to live. :-(
I definitely appreciate all your advice.

I know that that the economy is not doing good, but unemployment for the last 2 years. How do you survive and what do you do all day? That doesn't look good with the NYPD hiring process. I know that UPS is hiring. They hire anyone.

It might help that I am a woman. I go to school full-time as well as raising a 3year old. I make more on UEB then I would @ UPS and that's not being sarcastic. What's your thought?

For one thing. I didn't know you were a woman and I'm sorry. I don't know you personally, your life, school, and family situation. I know its tough with the economy being as it is, but I can tell you this. In your situation, I wouldn't lean on NYPD as a fall back job. This job has got more competitive within the past year and a half. I know a captain in the NYPD and he still can't get me in. To actually go back to things were in the past, economy has to get better and lower NYPD salary to weed out all those that are looking for a job, so they can go back to there old job. That's just my thoughts.
I wish you luck.
FYI: UPS provides medical benefits and pays for your school. Plus it's a good way to get in shape for the Academy. I have friends that work there.

I hear ya, and I do have other depts to fall on if this doesn't work out. But LE is what I want to do with my life. I grew up with parents and lots of family members in LE and that is something I decided to follow myself. We'll see. Good luck to you as well.

where and how did you obtain all of this debt. that might be the biggest question to get in or not. is it all credit cards?

By all means, if LE is what you desire, then go take a chance and test.
However, keep in mind a bankruptcy will not look good especially if its filed within the past 7-10 years. Credit is a major indicator of one's responsibilty and maturity level. I dont know your situation but in general, credit score and history is one of the primary reasons an applicant is disqualified. You have to remember, LE is very competitive and there are other applicants that dont have the same issues. My advice is finish school. Find a steady job and pay your bills on time. Wait several years then apply. Your chances will be better in a few years than they are now.

Yes, its all credit cards. About $13000 total. When I moved from one state to another I had a hard timer finding a job and by the time I did, I was so far behind and none of my creditors would even help. I couldn't by that time even make the minimums so I let everything go. Now it's been almost 6 years and 1 more year it would be off my record but I have 2 creditors now wanting to get a judgement so the ebst thing I could do is go bankrupt so I don't get a judgement.

i would seek professional advise from a financial planer before doing anything. if you were able to consolidate the creditcards and get one total amount a monthly payment could be doable with a decent job. i have a loan currently for 15000 at a low interest and pay a little under 200 a month. granted it will not be payed off for ten years but im not in jundgement or bankrupt. They are usually willing to work with you because they want there money back even if it will take awhile to get it back.
