Hey, I applied for the next court officer exam. I have not recieved word from them, and am worried my envelope might have not made it :)
Is there a day when they send us some confirmation of application?
and also, does anybody have information on the trainees? I am currently in College, and was wondering if they do something about training schedules to accomodate?

http://www.courts.state.ny.us/careers/exams/COtrainee-examguide4.2009.pdf Here's the info. I doubt if you'll hear from them until just before the exam. I always sent my apps. certified mail-return receipt requested.. Academy is now 14 weeks long M-F, so I doubt that you'll have any luck re: school

I'm a CO-Trainee who just graduated from the academy in January. As
soon2retire mentioned, you probably won't receive a confirmation/test date until shortly before the first exam date. As far as school, training in M-F, 9-5, no exceptions. You'd either have to take a semester off or arrange for evening or online courses if you were interested in attending the academy.

I dont know about if you file first you'll get a sooner test date. I took the test in 2002 and got hired in november of 2004. So don't expect to get hired right off the bat. If this is your first law enforcement job your going for really look into if being a court officer is for you. If you would rather be a beat cop and you have collage i would sugest looking into the NYPD or State Park Police. New york court have a patrol division called MSP but you wount see that for years if ever. It also depeneds on what union your in and how well you hang around the right people. Be prepard for the stand around and wait then wait some more. Your under so much supervision you can't do anything without approval. Listen it was a good job for the benifits but thiers alot to OCA and the court system. If anyone has questions please feel free to ask me? I worked in the bronx and the 9th JD.

When I received my first letter from the court system it stated something like your pretty much hired if you can complete your physical, medical, psyc and background check.
Fast forward a year I received a letter in March 09
This is to inform you have successfully completed all phases of your screening for appointment to the title of Court Officer Trainee. Your name will now be included on future list certifications for consideration for appointment.
Please be advised that prior to appointment,Court Officer Trainee candidates are required to successfully undergo a medical examination to ensure that they are medically qualified at the time of appointment
I wish you success for the future
This time Signature signed with real ink and not a copy
Latter in early june I received what seemed like a generic letter stating to make sure Candidates update their info with the background investigator. I did so and mailed my divorce papers which I had just received.
Facts- Took test in OCT -05
Started Process around OCT -08
It is now July 09 haven't been contacted or advised on anything,
Am I pretty much in, what happens now,
From New York Courts Website
12. Can I get an idea where I stand on list 45-722? As of early July 2009, the following ranks and scores have been reached:
New York City rank# 6072 score 83
3rd Judicial District rank# 6021 score 84
4th Judicial District rank# 6029 score 84
5th Judicial District rank# 9959 score 80
6th Judicial District rank# 12089 score 78
8th Judicial District rank# 14420 score 75
9th Judicial District rank# 3015 score 87
Note: I am ranked 12,000 something and signed up for the 8th district, The chart shows 8Th district at 14420 - Does this mean I have been selected.
Also during my written psyc - the lady said to the 11 or 12 of us in the room that most of us would be going to Niagara falls, because they need positions and here locally they only have 1
How long do I have left to go in this process, Should I take the 2009 test.
seems to me that I have already gone through a very long expensive process, would they really want to drop me at this point.

I have also completed the screening process and received the same letters for the 5th district. My BI told me that if I choose to take the next exam and pass that they just pick up the investigation where they let off. I would still have to complete the medical, physical and maybe the pysch. She also said that last time the test was about to expire they tried to hire everyone that had complete the process, it might not be the district you wanted but your on the job. Just an FYI. The next test won't be certified probaly until July of 2010. The state is a very slow moving process.

I was wondering when and if they do try and hire everyone that has completed the process do they go by test scores or location?
rex8857
07-10-2009, 04:23 PM
So what your saying is that if you complete all phases your probability of being hired is high, would you say 90%?
What will the final medical look like, is it the same as the first medical with all the xrays, weight and blood, eyes and ears, urine, and doctor?
If they call you for the last medical what does it mean, does it mean your appointed, and how long between last medical and the academy.
Plus if it says completed all phases, why would a background check still be needed, wouldn't that be done, isn't it done now,
Is your last letter signed with ink, and not a copied signature?

Unless you need to take the test on a certain day because of personal scheduling conflicts, it does not matter which test date you are given. The results from both exams are going to be compiled into one eligible list and applicants from both exams will receive their results and list numbers at the same time.

I am also in the process for the 8th district. I took my oral psychological somewhere near the end of May. The last I heard from my BI was that nobody was sure if there was going to be another academy and to start applying for the next test. I'm not sure if they will even schedule my Review Board or Medical. Who knows. It's kind of frustrating the different answers being heard.

Just heard some good news, they just stared transfer interviews and they usually don't do these interviews until a class is going in.. My brother-in-law just found out from his commanding officer and he also told him the academy for the city should be anytime and no later than novemeber.

Hi everyone! I'm actually posting on behalf of my husband. He does not have access to the Net on a regular basis and I do. We're hoping you can answer some questions. I think I've read through all the threads on this site regarding the court officer job and I still have some questions.
My husband just had his oral psych and is now waiting to hear if the board approves him. His rank is 3342 for District 4. Is that good? I think they're up to the 5000s for that district, but I don't know how it works. I'm thinking that someone with a rank of 3342 would get called before someone with a rank of 5000, but I'm not sure.
Also, we have a few really important questions. One, if the board approves him and offers him a spot in the academy, will he be told BEFORE the academy where his job would be? Also, he will probably (hopefully!) be going to the academy in Cohoes. We live about an hour away from there. Will he be able to come home each evening or is he required to stay there M-F and only come home on weekends? These are two questions we really need answers to. We have 4-month-old twins and can't afford day care for them (who can afford over $300 a week?!), so I need to be able to be home in the daytime with them and he needs to be able to be home at night with them. We work opposite shifts.
I think those are the 2 biggest questions we really need answers to. I'm sure we'll have more questions along the way though! So nice to meet all of you and hope to hear from you soon. :)

The only question I can answer relates to the academy. If you're only an hour away he can definitely commute. They don't want to pay for a room for him if they don't have to. The only issue may arise during the winter months- If a big storm is coming, he might want to stay overnight there. Good luck!! Hopefully someone else can definitively answer your other questions

Hi,
I just graduated from the Cohoes academy in January, so hopefully I can be of some help. As soon2retire said, he will be able to commute. No one is required to stay in the hotel unless they request lodging. I have 4 month old triplets, so I understand the constraints.
With regard to knowing in advance where he is going, they almost never tell you in advance. Most of my class didn't find out until the day after graduation, and I had to wait until the following Monday. What I can tell you, however, is that if he is going to the 4th JD (assuming you don't live all the way up north) he will most likely start out in Schenectady. Let me know if there's anything else I can help with.

Man, I had a whole reply written up and then it made me log back in and I lost the whole thing. Ugh! Anyway, thanks Fuerza for the info. And congrats on your triplets! Holy cow! And I thought I had a busy life!! :D
I wish we could know ahead of time what county he'd be assigned to, but it's good to know he'd probably be starting in Schenectady. We're only 45 minutes to an hour north of there, so that would be perfect! Fingers crossed!

In another life I was a unit instructor. While casually talking to the Academy downtown, I asked about a Sept class. They looked at their shoes and hushed "yeah right". Not shooting anyone down, but don't do anything till you hear something definite. Not even this posting means anything.

I had a feeling the class might be postponed. Probably due to budget cuts. Ugh. I guess we'll find out soon! (hopefully anyway)
Question- any guesses at all as to how long of a postponement we could be looking at (if it is indeed postponed)? Are we talking months or years? Any insight? I realize it will probably just be a best guess.

Spoke to someone at OCA in Albany and she confirmed what soon 2 retire stated. These classes going in will be the smallest with less than half of what they usually are which are about 120. She also stated that those that are finished with the screening process will have a good shot at getting in to another future class. Even if the new test is certified they will most likely extend the list like they did last time. They will know around February about another class. You just never know though. I found out I had only 116 completed applicants ahead of me for the city class. Maybe next time so the wait will begin once again. If they would of took 120 I was in but with only taking 40-50 I'm out unless many decline which I think not do to the economy. Goodluck to those waiting and to those going in.

Actually I called to add myself to other districts to be hired in and the women I spoke with told me ok and she went and did it and sent it over to placement bureau or training bureau I think. Then about an hour later i recieved a phone call from the supervisor and she told me I cant do that anymore. Once dates have been set for the academies you cant change your preference. So she gave me all my information and told me to hang in their and told me to send her an email around january and she will let me know whats going on for a future class. She believes their will be at least 2 more classes before the list expires and they can also extend the list a year to people who are waiting entry into an academy. Other words people who finished the hiring process and waiting for thier final medical. They can certify the list for the new test but it will take about 5-6 months after they certify it before anyone will be completed with the hiring process or even called to start. So they will still pull off our list. You never know and the number I called was OCA in NYC and they transfered me to Albany. They also are flirting with increasing the academy to 16 weeks. The police status bill is back in and it will have no problem passing the assembly and senate. Lets see if it gets signed in. Good Luck to all.
Letmypeoplego

To my knowledge the police bill has not been submitted and won't be (Co-incidently we checked Fri). The sucess of such a bill is the same as a Jet Superbowl victory. When the class is formed people don't show for whatever reason, others quit and the academy has in the past filled spots the first week. As far as phone calls I have spoken to Beaver St. about things, If you are outside the five boroughs, they think you are part of another system I can't imagine upstate. Good luck to those who make it. Again, this is my opinion. Counts for nothing.

I guess it never happened or its still in the plans. The police status bill is back in and was referred to codes on 2/24/09 and the bill number is A06064. Lets see what happens!!! Enjoy the hoiday.

The 2 new facilities in Saratoga and Brooklyn are still in the process. I think both are already existing facilities that are being rented and renovated. They told us the plans with regard to new recruit training after they open up. I'll just say that I'm glad that I graduated when I did...:D.
News about the police bill hasn't really been making it's way around the courthouses, although I have heard that it's been reintroduced. I think that people are just being more cautious after getting slapped in the face last time.

Holy God......"Police Officer Status".
Let me guess, they will no longer take anyone over 35 now, right? This is the same thing that happened to me with CBP.
I promise you all....they WILL get LEO Status and I will not be eligible, bet on it.

Odds are no change in status this year, hopefully I'm wring. And I doubt that anyone on a current list would be effected by a change. You took the test after being given a list of requirements that I assume you met. You should be good to go.

They already DO have LEO status due to their peace officer status. I do not know why they need Police status because it does not automatically let them into the state employee police pension fund.

There a number of reasons why OCA may go along with the change. Non of which have anything to do with the law enforcement powers of Court Officers.

You're right. Police status would not automatically let us into the police pension fund, but it would put us in a stronger position to fight for better retirement. In addition, it would enable us to execute bench warrants throughout the state as well as arrest warrants which we come across every day. Right now we can only execute bench warrants in NYC, LI, and Westchester and cannot do regular arrest warrants at all. When we come across one in court we have to sit and wait for the local pd to respond.
That being said, as far as peace officers go we already have very broad powers and police status would not change our job much if at all. I'd be very happy staying a peace officer if we were to get 20 or 25 and out.

True it would be nice but my thing is.. the push for it is too late if you think you will get better retirement out of the deal.
Look what they want to do with the NYPD and other departments who are in the 20 n out plan. No more!
My personal opinion is to save the money of the members to win this in Albany and use focus and the money for other things you guys can fight for.

Hello all! So my husband got a letter in the mail today reminding him to let his investigator know of any changes, like traffic tickets, etc., etc. Are we to assume that he may still be called for this class? He was told he would receive a rejection letter if he did not make the class. But we got this instead. Any thoughts? We are hoping to move soon, but need to wait on this. No point moving now if we might end up having to move a few months from now for the job. Thanks!

I received the same letter to update all information prior to appointment back in June. I am waiting for the city academy which I missed out on this time around. They are only taking 40 recruits and I believe the same for up in Cohoes. I was also told that they are done filling in the classes but you never know. I wish your husband luck and maybe he will get in. When I talked to someone at OCA she told me to give her a call in January and she will let me know about the next class and that these 2 classes going in are the smallest they ever had since the academy started. Its hard knowing that you were on the list and instead of putting in around 120 like usual they put in only 40-50. Hopefully the next classes will be bigger. At least I can get by the holidays without the stress of the academy. LOL!!!

LOL!!!
what is ur rank # i'm in the 3000, just trying average how many people are in front of me. thanks

My rank number is 2642 on the hiring list off the test and i was told there is 116 people ahead of me on the academy list for NYC. I finished my process June 11th of 08'. Thats the day they have me down as being cleared for the academy and i'm just waiting for the final medical. If they would of put a normal size class in this October I would of been in according to the women at OCA in Albany. Rumor as it that there will be another class for the city this February or March but its only a rumor. If your done with the hiring process there is a good chance you will be getting into an academy sometime in the future. They are still going to pull of the 45-722 list until they have enough people processesd from the new tests this October and December. So just like us people on the new list when its certified will have a wait as well. From list 45-722 the first set of recruit that finished the process did not start the academy until April of 08'. Thats 2 years after test 45-722 was certified which I believe was July of 06'. The still had recruits off the test before 45-722 enter the academy long after their list ended and 45-722 was certified. Hang in there and hopefully good things will come. Good Luck!!!!

Well, hubby got the letter today letting him know that he has been cleared for a future academy class, but not this one. It's the outcome we expected, so we're not surprised. It's nice to know for sure so we can make other plans. Hopefully it won't be 2 more years before he gets into a class, but who knows. We just won't hold our breath. Good luck to all of you! I'll be checking this site periodically to see if anyone's heard rumors about when the next class will be. ;-)

bluflu, i'm in the same boat as you. Cleared in April of 08, missed this academy. My rank is in the lower 2000's, and I'm probably right around your list # for the academy. I'm hoping that if they put in another NYC class it will be 100+. There are A LOT of people who have been waiting for their opportunity, and I'd like to see everyone that I went through the whole process with at least get a chance. If they have another NYC class I'm hoping mid Feb. I know that bodies are needed, guess there is just not enough $$ right now.

Unblindeacon lets stay afloat on that boat. LOL!!! Like they say you never know. I have a few family members in the courts and they keep telling me that when they went through the academy and the first day they had recruits drop out and they replaced them with new recruits that week. They say the ratio is for everyone that accepts the job there are 2-3 that dont take the job or took other jobs from other departments and some even failed their final medicals. I mean if thats the case and they took 50 guys then they went through 100 recruits on the list. I'm going to sit back and stay inshape and try not getting myself hurt until i get that call. Goodluck and hopefuly we will hear some good news after the new year. At least we can get by the holidays without the stress of the academy. LOL!!!

Was this number of people ahead of you before this class was put in? I am rank #26xx and finished my process April '08- so I am right around you. Was just trying to figure out about how many are ahead of me, and wasnt sure if I should subtract the 40 or so people that were lucky enough to make this upcoming class

Your list number is when you get called for processing, once you completed your hiring process and waiting for an academy class thats a different number. People may be ahead of you on the list number and got called first but failed the physical the first time and had to wait 90 days to retake it while you passed it your first time and if everything goes smooth for you then you will complete your process before them. It states in the brochure that you will enter an acadamy class at different times because some take longer to complete the process for whatever reason. If your done with everything and just waiting for the final medical you have a completion date with OCA. Mine is June 11th 08'. I started and finished my whole process in 5 months. 90 days is 3 months so you would be ahead of others that were ahead of you on the hiring list if you got called right after them. When I did my physical I was told alot of people fail the physical the first time. I had a women fail it because her pulse didn't recover quick enough on the step test. Then there was a group of about 50 people that came back for their retest and they all had to wait until the first timers going went first. I do know someone that got into the first academy in April 08' that was 1400 plus on the hiring list. It will come just be patient.

When they call you for final medical, do they call you from 718 or 212 area code? also if you do not pick up, do they leave a message?. I completed all phases in october 2008

lol bluflu we've been treading water this long! By now we should be able to wait a few more months on our head. I spoke to my investigator. He told me to just hang on a little bit longer, and that's exactly what I'm going to do. Stay on the diet, stay out of trouble (no tickets etc) and be ready when they are ready.

Word of advice to those who are getting ready to start the academy. If you don't want to be known, I suggest you remove your list #'s from these posts.

the sgt's do watch the board and they were all just like you once so they know about this site. Heres one though all the sgt's at the academy might not be true sgt's some are just acting sgt's waiting to pass the sgt's exam but because they half to have rank on you they make them acting sgt's. when i took my sgt's exam i had a few of them sitting next to me in the test.

All who are starting the academy make sure you are in full suit and tie your first day. But dont worry about the right ups they tell you about its all to scare you but does not affect your employment.

Don't worry about the write ups! That's probably the worst advise I've ever heard! Trainees are on probation for 2 years. You can be fired for just about anything and OCA doesn't even need to give you a reason. Why in the world would you tell future recruits not to worry about being written up.
