Just curious who carries a boot knife or anything like that while on duty. Or if your dept. even allows it. I don't know much about what style/brand would be best. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I carry a Benchmade Automatic, its the Mel Purdue model. They retail in QuarterMaster for somewhere in the $130.00 range. It opens quick and has a really strong pocket clip that you can use to clip to a boot or pocket or wherever you can think of clipping it. I have had for about a year and it has kept a really sharp edge.
The only drawback is keeping it clean, I have noticed that a little bit of lint will cause it open really slowly, I use a pair of tweezers and some WD-40 every week and its as good as new.

I carry a Kershaw Whirlwind. I paid around $74.00 for it and it's well worth it. It opens quick and stays fairly clean. Have used it quite a few times and it still has the factory edge after about a year. Quite amazing actually though I do think it will need sharpening soon. Can't complain after that.

I currently carry a CRKT large 'Apache' with plain blade. I also have a Schrade 'ToughTool' on my duty belt.
On bit of 'advise'...if possible, if you are RIGHT handed', you MIGHT consider keeping a LEFT-handed knife in your LEFT pocket, in the event your right hand is preoccupied with, say....'gun retention'? Same applies for 'lefties'.

HEARTS and MINDS
Same applies for back up guns!
Benchmade automatic in off-hand pants pocket, I had the same idea as the previous posters. Spyderco in my vest pocket, I can get to it easily with either hand. Gerber multiplier on the strap of my gear bag, within arms reach while in my car, had it on my gun belt but lost weight and ran out of space. Glock shovel (really light) also in the gear bag.
I guess dealing with a no-backup-gun policy has turned me into a cutlery junkie.

S&W automatic knife in my off-side pocket and a S&W boot knife in my strong side boot (I wear my B/U gun on my off side ankle for the same reasons you carry your knife in your off side pocket)

We are allowed to carry a knife, or a multi-tool on our operational equipment belts, but you have to purchase it yourself, as well as a suitable scabbard to carry it in.
I carry a 4 tool folding knife (long blade, can opener, bottle opener/flat blade screwdriver, awl/punch), a folding single blade knife and a multi-bit screwdriver in a double mag pouch.

Generally a CRKT M16 Tanto most of the time.
I just ordered a benchmade 710 in the M-2 steel .
I will be getting a benchmade auto knife soon.
They are expensive knifes but I think they are the best.
I can get the benchmade auto's from $99.99-$129.00 depending on model.

Timberline TDL (spring assisted) with a bead blasted combo blade is in the strong side front pocket. Benchmade CQC-7 with bead blasted combo blade usually rides in the support side front pocket. Both have clips.

On the subject of knives; are any of you aware of a situation where an officer used a knife as a weapon (as opposed to a tool)? Any untoward reactions to that? Some of the officers at my dept. carry boot knives, pocket knives, neck knives, etc. I am looking for a decent blade to carry as well and have looked over the responses in this thread for ideas.Just curious about the reaction to an officer cutting a bad guy in the age of PC.Of course it would be a lethal force situation and I have no problem with it at all.I have no problem with using the Mark 1 V8 four wheeled anti personnel weapon or a big rock either if the doo doo is in the fan. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Ok, someone admitted it, so I'll cop to it.........I have a neck knife too. The S&W one (although I'll be damned if I can figure out what the whistle molded into the sheath is for.)

Some carry one in their vest's front pocket where you keep your steal plate for extra protection. That way you can reach in and grab it out in a pinch. Bottom line is they come in handy when someone needs to be cut out of their seatbelts. Or when you arrest multiple individuals and have to use plastic cuffs http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

THE BEST automatic knife I've EVER seen, is the Severtech! Even if an obstruction blocks the blade path, even at 3/4 open, when the obstruction is moved out of the path, the blade will CONTINUE to the full open and locked position!
VERY strong titanium clip, about a 59 Rc hardness Tanto configured blade. The side-slabs ARE aircraft grade aluminum, powder coated black, but aluminum (conducts electricity!) None the less!
I do NOT like Gerber products, because of an incident way back when I was in the military and the first 3/4 inch broke off in a neck. I wrote the company numerous time, and they didn't even write back "Kiss My Butt!" I don't feel like they stand behind their product, when your life may ride on the performance of their product. I feel that's bad business.
(As for their multi-plier, the handles come fully together, this means that if, what you're gripping slips, it WILL pinch the crap out of your hand! I feel this is more of Gerber's lack of detail for their product.)
Cold Steel makes several very good knives, at a relatively reasonable price.
I carry at all time, my Voyager series. It has good edge retention, can be opened left or right handed (not as EASILY, but opens none the less!) I have the plain blade, as it's easy for me to sharpen and keep sharp.
I have cut and pried the windshield out, and then cut the seatbelt, of an overturned Kenworth, to free the trapped driver, with a Cold Steel Master Tanto. It dulled the blade badly, but, I sent it back to Cold Steel with pictures of the accident and a letter and they resharpened it free of charge. When it was returned, it was good as new.
The Urban Pal, while a good knife, has the "look" of a "Evil weapon!" which, as you know, can really hurt you in a trial!
For a neck knife, it hard to beat Barry Dawson's 4" Plain edge Tanto.
It's a VERY high quality custom knife, at a production knife price!
WELL worth looking into! (If you have a design, or a special need knife, Barry may be able to work with you on seeing it made into a reality.)

For neck knives, I have both the S&W unit, and I have a CRKT Bear Claw. I rarely carry one. My physique makes it stand out a little.

Cold Steel does make some great stuff. I've never been disappointed with anything I bought from them.
I don't know if they still have it, but they used to have a program called "Special Projects". Among the things in that catalog were knives that had minor cosmetic flaws (usually the finish or a nick in the handle). They'd mark them and then sell them at about half price. No problems with structure, it was all cosmetic stuff. Might be worth looking into if you are considering anything from them, especially if it's going to be a real working knife. I bought one from them for my SWAT gear, figuring I was going to scratch it up anyway.

I carry a Benchmade Emerson CQC-7, however I don't think they are made anymore. I have seen that Ernest Emerson is now producing his CQC-7 for approx. $119-$129. This knife has served me well for the last three years.
Most officers in my area carry some type of folder(auto or single hand) in their front trouser pocket.

Yeah, when Emerson left Benchmade, he took the CQC-7 with him. I have the same Benchmade/Emerson unit with the bead blasted combo blade, and I love that thing. As Crocodile Dundee would say "Not THATS a knife!"
