I was wondering what the OT is like in NYPD, is it there for the taking if u want it? alson can u get part time jobs like working security at a bar or restaurant? and typically on avg. what would u say a rookie cop takes home his first yr. in addition to his 43,000 base? thanks

OT availability depends on where you work.

You're not going to work at a bar unless you word it in a way that doesn't make it sound like a bar.

And if they find out that you work at a bar while on probation, you'll probably get fired.

Working at a bar while on probation, let alone a cop, is one of the most reckless decisions you can make and according to my dad (he's retired NYPD and now works in Manhattan at a bar) it's considered a conflict of interest and you'll be fired if you're on probation.

My boss who is retired NYPD was thought to be working at a bar he frequented and was put on departmental trial. He was acquitted though.

I think you guys are misunderstanding me. By working at a bar or club I mean strictly as security not as a bartender. I am an officer down here in DC and we have club zone at all the clubs for OT just to show a police presence. And we have part time jobs where we wear out dept. issued uniforms and work at such places like Wendys, home depot, cvs ,etc. etc.

yeah you can sign up for paid uniform details (banks, stores, yankees, etc..) with one year on patrol, they pay a fixed $33 an hour, which I heard might be going up to $40 soon (hopefully).
You can easily get department OT if you collar someone at the end of tour or before an RDO, that OT, no matter how much they're gona grumble, bosses can't really deny you that. Other then that, they've cut down quiet a bit on getting cash OT if you volunteer to transport or sit on a hospitalized perp or what not...
Ordered overtime is when you get notified to do some parade or some such on your day off, this being NYC , we get quiet a few of these per year...usually a nice easy way to get 10-15 hours OT just to stand somewhere.
My first year (2008) I made just a tad under $47k, first 6 months was academy with very minnimal OT (maybe around 40 hours in the first 6 months). The base at the time was $40k so I did OK for my first year I think.

Lets not forget.. do not let the greedy supervisors get you!
If you do enough tour changes.. whatever the difference in hours are, its OVERTIME on THEM!.

A Police Officer cannot work in any licensed premise (bar) in any capacity in NYS. That is NYS law, not just NYPD regulations. The only place you can work, might be a deli, (off premise consumption).

They can change your tour up to 15 times a year, any more than that and it's time and a half.

The whole bar thing couldnt be any more true.
I personally know a couple of guys that somehow one way or another were found to be working within a bar.
BOOZE + MONEY + WOMEN= CAREER ENDERS!
This of course you do not booze up, get involved in shady finances or beat women, you shall be OK.

What if you want to open up your own sportsbar?
Who's to hold you back from the American Dream of owning your own small business?

The city of new york/new york city police department.
If you do not like the rules, do not take the job.
Blame it on past bad experiences which caused the city and department to sway in the direction they are in now.
Im not going to say HOW to do it, that is on you. But I will say.. STAY AWAY from anything to do with alcohol.
You can open up a contracting business, computer business, any sort of business except for a few rules and regulations behind them.

my suggetsion for a part time job is becoming a part time officer in like a small village police department. You have the qualifications needed. I know of departments such as Ocean beach (3 ful time) and Head of the Harbor (2 full time) on LI are all part timers.

Is that even possible? Here in NJ, there is a law stating that it is a big NO-NO.

You won't be able to get a liquor license if you're a cop. Conflict of interest.

NYPD will not allow you to work for another department while in their employ.
The easiest and best way for extra cash-O/T
