I went on the NYPD website and printed out the application for a ride along. I am an officer in Las Vegas and i am going to ny to visit my parents. there was a line that said if your from out of state you need a letter from your employer. I called to find out what the letter has to say and they told me the ride along program has been suspended and they dont know when they will bring it back. Does anyone know how long its been suspended for? kind of stinks i was looking foward to doing a ride along. o well maybe one day they will bring it back :(

I never even heard of one actually being implemented!

When I worked there, a guy in my command took someone on a ride along, but that was about a year ago, I'll ask him what he knows about it.

I spoke with him, he said he wasn't really supposed to take him on the ride along, looks like you're out of luck.

Ride-a-longs were done before and it was usually for students, these were the official ones, it involves phone calls, letters, reasons, and so on, stay away from even asking, in todays NYPD, it aint gonna happen.

Off-duty cops used to come along for ride-a-longs on an unofficial basis. For a time, I worked in Mid-Town and it was not unusual to see out of town, or even out of country officers, in the back seat of the RMP. That was then, times have changed.

Again, this is todays NYPD, I do not know if the cops or the bosses would allow it or get away with it. This might be the kind of thing you would have to know someone personally to do it.

Same here, I was gonna look into it when I visited NY next week until I saw on the website that it was only 2 hours, not worth a 2 hour drive, fight traffic, find the place, fill out the paperwork, etc. Good thing I didn't even bother with it since they aren't doing it.

I've done 3 of them...no one told my command that we weren't doing them. As of yesterday, the paperwork was still on the desk. I still say they're a waste of time, but we do do them.
