I am looking to take the kid shooting. I'd like to find a nice place I can set him up with some cans and teach him the basics. My depts range doesn't allow instruction. Anyone know of any BLM land in Riverside county?

There is a BLM office in Riverside. Look in the phone book and call them.

You can order a map:

I'd like to know too, don't want to be shooting where I shouldn't be.

Papabacon, I had actually seen that map but was having some issues with the small print and being able to determine which map I would also need. I was also hoping I could find out here for free instead of ordering a map. Yep, I'm cheap :)

I'm cheap too, that why I was hoping you would buy the map and share ;)

Is Joshua Tree too far? If not there's a nice dry lake bed area that we have been going to for years to camp, ride quads and shoot, its not on any maps, primarily locals.

Is that out 62 something? I live in Beaumont, so it isn't terribly far.

Yes its off the 62 just past the CHP building look to your left, you will see a small mountain range at the base is a dry lake bed. Nice area for all kinds of activity during non summer months. Mostly a locals only place, not overly regulated like a lot of state places can be. Never very crowded either. Its called Sunfair dry lake bed, look it up on google maps. I'd cut and paste it but I am not that computer literate.

Basically its 62 to sunfair left (Sign says airport) then Broadway right until you hit the dry lake bed. As far as shooting there is a small hill that people shoot near. They go behind the hill and shoot into the mountain. It's dark colored, on the north side of the lake bed, cant miss it. If you just want to shoot take Cypress off of Sunfair so you come onto the bed closer to the shooting area.

Just call the office, "we'd" be happy to help.;)

No need to pay for a map, just ask for a suggestion...

There is also a place near Indio called "Berdoo Canyon". Popular shooting area and further in a great 4x4 trail. If you have a 4x4 to go in it will take you to the backside of Joshua Tree. I made a day of it with my son and father in law and took along the 357 and 44 and layed waste to a few old bowling pins.

Thanks Garbage Man, I'll have to check it out in a couple of weeks. I picked up 500 rounds of .40 from a guy over on calguns for a real good price, so I got plenty to plink with.
