just out of curiosity, if for one reason or another an individual who has completed a self sponsored academy and cannot get hired on as a peace officer, what if any other job oppurtunities does a POST Cert. open up?

My only thought would be some sort of private security / executive protection. When you say cannot get hired as a peace officer, is it because the applicant can't pass a POST background, or the CA minimum standards?

There are some agencies which employ peace officers, however do not participate as POST members. "specialty" departments such as private college Departments of public safety. Pepperdine and USC are the tops that come to mind. Pepperdine's PSO's are unarmed, USC's are armed. They are covered under 830.7(b) PC;
830.7. The following persons are not peace officers but may exercise the powers of arrest of a peace officer as specified in Section 836 during the course and within the scope of their employment, if they successfully complete a course in the exercise of those powers pursuant to Section 832:
(b) Persons regularly employed as security officers for independent institutions of higher education, recognized under subdivision (b) of Section 66010 of the Education Code, if the institution has concluded a memorandum of understanding, permitting the exercise of that authority, with the sheriff or the chief of police within whose jurisdiction the institution lies.

Other specialty departments like city park rangers, airport patrol (Long Beach) typically are not as stringent in their standards as POST agencies.

Who told you that? LB Airport, Marine Patrol, etc., go through the same BG as a police officer and are held to the same standard.

Check out the "tribal" police/public safety departments. San Manuel, Sycuan, Viejas, Pala Rangers, etc etc.

Park ranger is a big one. Many cities/counties have PC832 rangers.

Campus public safety at the private colleges or community college cop is one.

Maybe animal control. They use PC832 often.

There are a lot of stepping stone jobs out there.

Wasn't knocking them, I know they conduct *a* background. Went to the academy with 2 LB Airport guys who both said their backgrounds were "okee'd" through.

EP is not an option. The academy doesn't teach anything about that.

In Riverside County, CA there are sworn officers with the Social Services Dept. RCSSD sends their officers through the Sheriff's Academy along with their own deputies- held to the same standards and quals, and are POST Basic certified.

California State Mental Health Dept. also has POST certified peace officers that do unarmed hospital security. Last Palomar College (San Diego area)Police Academy graduation I attended had about six or seven in their graduating class.

Good way to get that flatfoot in the door. :D

^ I knew a couple of Metro State Hospital guys that went through either a Level III (ONLY) and also some that went through a Level II. According to their job posting, they only require PC 832. State hospital falls under PC 830.38. Now my question is if some only have PC 832 and others only Level III or II, are they granted 24/7 status or only the duration of their duty?

There are officers there who have level II training and there are those with level I training as well. The officers do shakedowns, can cite and arrest, and do transports, I don't know of any security officer positions that entail those duties. Level III, II and PC 832 have peace officer status only on duty. Both Patton and Metropolitan are still hiring.

BAM !!! You corrected that at the right time! Ditto USC DPS( they have LAPD plus a cordial history with LASD, that keeps them on their toes and extermely professional and functional) .Sorry, Blizzination, but even the "specialized" and district enforcement agencies have tightened up in their processes. The best thing a POST academy trained individual can do is take an civilian/non sworn position( which will still require a minimum BG that will take into account quite a few things that a BG for a peace officer position would), or find a job- like WESTEC or Bel Aire Patrol contract alarm response security, take care of the "issues" in their past, and hope that it doesn't take longer than 3 yrs( the shelf life of the POST academy training)

Most CA. community Colleges aren't going to accept "Weak " BGs" either. and the Cities that have PC 832 Rangers , have peolple who tend to do little more than disturbance and dispute resolution, with an occasional citation issuance.
