I applied for correctional officer with the federal prisons. Just want to get some info. Are they sworn? If they can carry gun off-duty or need ccw permit?

I'm not a BoPer, but can answer some of your questions. Yes, federal BoP C/O's (and pretty much anyone else who works within a BoP facility) is considered LE and receives 6c LE retirement. You attend a three week basic course at FLETC and can carry off-duty under HR218 (however if you get involved in something off-duty you're probably on your own). No LE powers off-duty. Don't take this as the gospel as i'm not with BoP, but I bet some folks who are can chime in and correct/add any additional information.

I'm former BOP and everything you said is right on the money. The BOP hated the fact we could carry. They would not even provide gun lockers for staff to check their weapons into when they came to work. We all had to be "creative".
If you are involved in a shooting off duty you are on your own. But you can carry anything you want on your own dime under hr218.
