Our currently issued duty holster is the Safariland 295 level2, which features a front thumb break and a lock clip on the inside. Our bike officers formerly had the option to use nylon gear with the Uncle Mike's Pro3 holster. However, our firearms instructors recently looked at them and decided that the draw strokes of the two holsters (forward and out vs forward, twist, and up) was a risk to cause muscle confusion at bad times and therefore killed that option and everybody wears leather at all times now. I briefly looked through the Galls catalog today, but I'm too tired to make sense of it. Can any of you suggest a quality nylon holster with a draw stroke like the 295? I didn't see any with a front thumb break. Even though we are in a budget crunch I think the powers that be might be amenable to letting us buy our own if we can settle on a good one.

I'm not too familiar with the 295.

I used the Uncle Mikes level 2 for a few years and I liked it. You might want to look at it.

Piece of advice......unless you absolutely need the jacket slot version, go with the high ride offering.

I don't know about draw mechanics, but as far as nylon goes....I hate uncle Mikes (sorry nite http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif )

I do like Bianchi Accumold, though, for duty nylon.

In the end, whatever you like.

I'd bet you could get some manufacturers to send you some T&E gear and you bike patrol guys could try it all out and see what you lied best.

"I hate uncle Mikes (sorry nite)"

Hey, you're entitled to be wrong http://www.officer.com/ubb/tongue.gif

Actually, there was one other thing I forgot to mention. On one Uncle Mikes I had, the retention strap deteriorated. I've guessed that it was from solvents, but not certain. Never seen it happen on another holster (unlike the $%*^ SSIII that always breaks down)

Safariland makes the 070 SSIII(Level 3) in NYLOK, which looks GREAT with other nylon gear. www.holsters.com (http://www.holsters.com)

Niteshift I doubt you heard about this but a school resource officer in a SC police department was wearing her department issued Uncle Mike's level 2 nylon retention holster when a child grabbed the holster and accidently caused the weapon to fire. This happend because the childs finger was small enough to fit between the holster and the trigger guard of the weapon.
I looked at Uncle Mike's level 2 holster and was surprised to see that the holster didnt fully cover the trigger guard of my Glock 22.
Uncle Mike's stated that they would look at the holsters and see if a general recall was necessary. I never did see anything about a recall of these holsters. Fortunately no one was injured in this incident.

If you ever get a chance to try Safarilands model 295 holster do it. IMO this is the best holster on the market today for police use. It's an open top holster with a front snap. With a quick flick of the thumb and forward break of the weapon the draw from these holsters is smooth and natural, they also have an adjustable tension screw that allows you to customize the fit of the holster, I personally keep mine loose to aid in a smoother draw. The only draw back involves the material this holster is made from, safarilaminate tends to crack after repeated use. The front of the thumb break snap will become brittle and crack after about two years of use. Their has been one other problem with these holsters, the retention device that clamps around the trigger guard was not working properly on some models that were made in the spring of 1999 and the weapon could be pulled from the holster easily. But Safariland recalled the holsters in question and repaired or replaced them.

Gould and Goodrich's Phoenix line has a level holster which has the same drawing action as the Safariland 295.

I also agree that the Safariland 070 is a great holster.

"safarilaminate tends to crack after repeated use. The front of the thumb break snap will become brittle and crack after about two years of use."

That was one of my biggest complaints about it. For a holster that expensive, you should expect more. The stiff thumb break portion lasted less than a year. For a holster retailing for over $100, why can't they put a stiffener in the thumb break, the same one I have in holsters retailing under $50?

A quote from Niteshift "For a holster retailing for over $100, why can't they put a stiffener in the thumb break, the same one I have in holsters retailing under $50?"

Thats a good question you need to email that to Safariland.

The Safarilaminate (??) I used had a metal stiffener on the thumbbreak.

Do they not do that anymore??

Bonk,
As the Safariland 295 is your issue holster, the same holster in Nylok finish would seem to be a no-brainer.

Sotex I checked safarilands web site and could not find the model 295 in nylok, just safarilaminate.

Spec-ops,
I just went to their website-it bites!
I know I've seen it in one or more of the many catalogs that come to the office. I'll go find the right one. How about asking your local stocking dealer?

DHB makes some good kit. I really liked their thigh holsters when I was on the team. They were a little hard to snap back in though!

You can get the Safariland 6280 in a Nylok version. Level II protection, fantastic holster that holds up quite nicely. We use them in the boats.
