Hello everybody... I am currently in the application process for LAPD. Just need to take my medical evaluation and second pt test... Heard that hiring has slowed down. :( Does anybody have any information on the upcoming academy dates? And if everything goes well, about how much longer until I can get an actual job offer? Thank you in advance for any information...

LAPD does not go month-by-month, it runs by 28-day/four week time frames called Deplyment Periods (DP's). There are 13 per year.
Even of you knew the DP start/end dates, you still would never be able to tell your start date with any certainty. From now on, they will be filling classes as people retire, one-in-for-one-out. Even during good times, past applicants certified for the Academy have been called on Friday, asking if they can start Monday.

As far as I know they are still have one academy each month just about. I think they said around 40 per academy.
Keith, I have heard that too. Hopefully they will give me atleast a week's notice before I have to track across country from Delaware to Los Angeles lol.

Yesterday I spoke with a mentor to get an answer to that question. She had no idea regarding my status either. After your testing is complete (but before the oral psychological) your background investigator finishes your case, he sends it to his supervisor to either approve or kick back for more info. Then you seem to be in limbo while they schedule people to fill the coming adacemy class ..pending the oral psych.
They had an academy class begin this past Monday the 22nd. The next won't be until 4 weeks later...July 20. She said they haven't chosen the July class yet. Said they would be picking them within this 2 week period to go in for the oral psychological interview (this is the final test that is AFTER the 2nd agility test and the medical and the MMPI...meaning another day.)
I have no further info. Seems that they could be a bit more efficent in the process, and enlighten along the way. It would save a lot of phone calls.

Using the dates supplied by Leghorn, you can make a mark on your calendar every 4th Monday. You'll then have the potential start dates for the foreseeable future.

Calls for July 20th academy went out starting this week. I and several others I know have gotten the call to start on July 20th for class 7/09.
Don't know if they're still going to do one class per month or what. I was told by an officer in recruitment that the magic number for class size is now 36-38 recruits per class, as opposed to the 70+ they have been running for the past few years.
If any of you are going to be in the 7/09 class, drop me a PM. I've got some information for you.

if you haven't done the medical you are months away from an academy date. Sorry.

Good to hear they're still hiring, albeit at a much slower pace. I took the medical over three months ago and I'm pretty much in limbo, last time I checked my background was still being reviewed by a case manager. If this keeps up, I might find myself enlisting in the army.

I don't know how true that is. If you haven't done your medical but your background is cleared you could be good to go. I know some people that were done backgrounds then took medical and hired the next couple weeks.

That should be good news for me because my BG should be done. I actually had one done with LAPD 2 years ago, right after I got my AA, and was offered a position. I deferred it though because I wanted to go into the academy with a bachelor’s degree. Now that I have one I started the process again. I don't think there is much for them to look up in my background since it was done already. I didn't even have to take a poly again... I also have my medical scheduled for 7/7... hopefully I am getting close...

Hello everyone...quick question, I have passed everything and as far as I know my file is with the Hiring and Evaluation dept. ever since the beginning of June. So, I'm still waiting on the final call, any ideas why they take so long to contact me? or, is it normal? because I haven't heard anything for about a month now, just waitin and its gettin a bit frustrating..
Thanks for any input.

There are many possible explanations but one of the biggest is:
You're one of hundreds, if not thousands, of applications they're going through. Couple that with the fact that many of the folks at the Personnel Department are civilians and they have recently been assigned "furlough days," which means less days worked, and that might be your answer.... maybe.

Have you heard from your background investigator yet? If not you are still months away from a "final call". If you haven't heard from them they haven't started your background yet. My packet has been in The hiring and evaluation department since April. It takes forever now that they have slowed hiring and are having budget cuts.

I think part of it runs on just being lucky too. It seems some people have their final packet turned in and get a call within 2 weeks, and some it takes 5 months. Who knows.

After almost 7 months in the process I got the call today for the August 17th academy. So it looks like they are still going month by month. One thing I learned through this is if you want something done, call, call and call some more. You really have to stay on your BI and especially medical if you want to make it to the academy sooner, medical had me held up for almost a month, after getting tired of waiting I made a phone call to the supervisor there and she had me cleared in 30 minutes, never deal with the front desk. Always be polite to your BI but if you want this job definitely be more hands on and contact him/her, its ok to ask questions.

CONGRATS on getting hired....
Did you call the number for the LAPD Mentors? I've tried that a few times but I keep getting an answering machine. When you called did you just ask for an update on your status or do you have to ask them something else? Also, I took my Medical earlier this week but have yet to meet my BI. I went through the process two years ago so I'm wondering if the reason I haven't heard from my BI is because they still have much of my info on file... How long ago did you get a provisional job offer?

No I called the personel department directly at 213.473.9060. They can look in the system and and see where your at in the process and forward you to the right contacts. First ask them did your medical clear and is it in the system, then ask about your BI and if they can't help you ask if you can be forwarded to somebody who might know. I did the expedited test so I had a BI before I took the medical. If you haven't been through the background I highly suggest you stay on your references about sending the surveys back asap, as well as taking care of anything on your credit report, if you take care of that it'll go much quicker

Have you heard from your background investigator yet?
Yes, he already turned my final package and was approved by his supervisor. The last thing I took was the pshycological interview, in which I passed and the doctor told me she was goin to turn in her report and I should be expecting a call within a week or so... So far its been a bit over a month and no call yet.

Thx LA Copper, that seems understandable.

Lol, sometimes it does seem that way... perhaps whoever's package is first on the the stack. :P
Congrats FightingIllini !! I called the personnel dept directly too and said I passed everything and all I had to was wait... so i guess patience is a great virtue. hehe

Thanks I can't wait to get started this is my dream job! Are you going to the august academy? If so good luck
I have received my certification letter stating I've completed the hiring process successfully, and passed my psych. Now I am on the eligibility list and am hopeful for september hiring. I don't know, however, how many others are on that list right now, or what my chances are of actually being selected.
I'm glad to have made it to the end of the hiring process while others got dq'd, but I sure would like to get that job offer call.
If anyone has any info about the september LAPD class starting to fill, let me know.

I became elegible for hire August 12th its been over a month and no word yet. I called down to recruiting and all they could tell me was I was now eligible for hire. Getting frustrating because I got out of the military Aug 12th too so im unemployed right now. Now im in the situation of do i wait it out for the acadamy or start a new job with the possibility that I might have to quit right after they hire me. Anyone got the call yet for September Acadamy or in the same boat as me.

As of today all bets are out the window. They are talking about layoffs and furloughs, even for public safety.

Lots of rumors going around right now one is 18 furlough days next year for police, another is a total hiring freeze, and the last one is that if they really have to they will lay off all recruits in the academy

You only spend the first DP (month) at Elysian Park. The rest of your time will be split between two other facilities, one in the north San Fernando Valley and the other near LAX airport. Silverlake/mid-city area is geographically about midway between the facilities, but you are looking at harsh traffic commuting from everywhere except EP after the Academy gets out. I would personally recommend lodging close the LAX area because those days have more of your PT. In the end though you are going to spend a bit of time on the freeway (and on the PT field). Welcome to LA.

If you're gonna live in the City, which I wouldn't recommend, then I'd suggest somewhere in the middle of the academys; maybe somewhere around the 101/405 Freeways. Sherman Oaks comes to mind.
Wilshire/Korea Towns are not good areas and not easy to get in and out of due to traffic.

Definately try to get a place near LAX and then just carpool with a classmate up to Valley.
