To make a long story short, I was an officer In AZ for a little less then a year. Everything was going good, no problems, no safety problems no nothing. My marriage started going down the drain and my wife moved back to CA and left me alone and with a mortgage. I resigned from my position for personal reasons and moved to ca to try and save my marriage. After a while in ca I decided to walk away from my house due to a variety of reasons. Mostly because I could not sell it and could not afford to make the payments. So I am sure my credit is F'ed.

My question is if I apply to any departments in Cali, as a recruit or a lateral am I wasting my time, even if I am completely honest about my situation? Will anyone even look at me? Consider me? Or did I royally F up and now must accept the consequences? I am looking at So Cal departments if that makes any difference.

I am not looking for pity or to be told I was wrong for doing this or that, I came here to see if I could salvage my career choice or if I should just move on and start something new? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and god bless.

seriously you just have to give it a shot. I have seen good applicants turned down and others that you would think would be a DQ get hired, and some even promoted. but don't go applying at Newport Beach or Beverly hills of course, keep it real.

If I remember correctly, you had to have worked for at least one full year in your prior department for California POST to consider you a "lateral," and that is only after you pass their tests.

I know some departments, including mine, will definitely question you as to why you "gave up" your house and allowed your credit to be messed up. But like WPD said, you should at least give it a try and find out for sure.

Why not Newport Beach? Have you heard bad things about the department?

No, not at all. I was just giving examples of places not to apply if you have any background issues. :D

And LACOPPER is correct about laterals, I read the post kind of fast and missed the part about less than a year on , or it was the wine I was drinking :o

Yeah kind of figured about the lateral issue. Just concerned about the credit issue. I am hoping if I am straight with them, that they will understand? JUst wasn't sure if I would be wasting my time and theirs by applying? I appreciate the help and the comments

just do your homework on depts and be straight up with the BGI, most will tell you up front if you should withdraw from the process.

best of luck, I am originally from AZ wishing I could lateral over to AZ.
