I am POST Cert. in KS for full time LEO...What are CA's requirements for me to transfer to that state? Will I have to jump through tons of hoops??

I don't know much about the process, but this could be a good place to start. Good luck.

I got this off of CA Post's website

"I have completed a basic course in another state, can I transfer my training to California?"

California POST does not have reciprocity with other states, nor do we have a challenge process. California POST has a Basic Course Waiver (BCW) process for individuals who want to become California peace officers and have completed at least 664 hours of general law enforcement training (including a general law enforcement basic course of at least 200 hours), and have at least one year of successful sworn general law enforcement experience. The BCW is a 4-step process that includes: self-assessment/application; POST evaluation; written and skills testing; and issuance of a waiver letter. Once the BCW process is successfully completed, the applicant receives a waiver of the California Regular Basic Course; however, acceptance of the waiver is at the discretion of the employing agency.

Here's the link to the waiver: http://www.post.ca.gov/Training/btw_intro.asp

We have an Officer who lateraled from KS a little bit ago where he was a K9 handler. I don't recall him mentioning any major hoops to jump through with CA POST. Problem will be finding an agency here to work for during a time of deep budget cuts.

Where are you going to work here in Ca. no one is hiring. The threats of lay offs are still being thrown around. Agencies are going to be pretty selective when an opening does come up.

There are places hiring. CHP, Oakland, and SDPD are still hiring big time. You may not get to be picky... but there are places hiring in CA.

Yeah, "good luck with that!" 99% of the OC depts are picky, and there are far too many local area recruits to pick from ( like those pre service at Goldenwest Academy and Fullerton City College academy); we had several guys come from out of State and tried the POST waiver - it got them in the door, BUT they simply ended up being sent by the city to LAPD Basic Academy ( ARTC) anyway.

If the orig. KS poster is still relatively healthy, then I'd suggest he apply as a "lateral" but let the agency he applies for know that he is willing to attend a local CA. POST academy anyway. I beleive that CA. Basic academy requirements are more extensive than what KS requires, with most academies going 24-28 wks and totalling between 800 to 1,100 hrs of course work and training. Tactics and training, even state laws, are significantly different here, and the beneift of a CA. POST academy might give the original poster a chance to "bridge the gap" and fit his experience to the way laws a enforced here. KLETC(Kansas standards) only requires 14 wks of training and a total of 500-600 hrs.Good luck on the waiver process, and post the results...

BTW-Where do you want to work ,Copperfive Oh? Northern Cal or So.Cal? and what type of agency? small and suburban, or large and inner city?
