Need some help !! Several months ago there was a post regarding second chance police departments in northern California. I tried looking for it and had no luck. Can someone direct me to it or if you still have the list, can you send it to me. Or if anyone is aware of any agency up north that would give a guy who got screwed by his deaprtment another chance. I’m thinking of heading up north.

OK, I give... I'll bite. Why did you get screwed by your previous dept? And what makes you think one of these so call "second chance depts" are gonna hang their name on you? (no i'm not with any of them on the list)

If anyone has "The List", would you PM me with it, especially if the departments take the Out of State POST Wavier?

"The List" is irrelevant because no departments anywhere on the central coast, bay area, or northern are hiring! lol

There are some small depts. hiring in Northern CA. One has to look hard and be thorough. When I say small, I mean 40 or less depts. all the way down to 10 men/women depts. They are out there, not many, but they are there.

Few are hiring now, but in 3 months, 6 months, next year....

When the money starts flowing again, and it will, there will be a lot of agencies that have put off hiring during this time, and suddenly they will be really short cops, again.

Isn't San Jose still hiring up there?

That's a good point, since it's only logical that the lack of hiring has no bearing on LEOs retiring. People are still retiring, regardless of the economy. So, those gaps will have to be filled at some point. What I see now is a shift to hiring laterals, and very little action on the recruit hiring situation. If there are large layoffs of LEOs, all of those retirement openings will likely go to laterals who were laid off. Recruit hires will go the way of the Dodo bird. That makes it even more difficult for individuals like myself to get hired. It's a compelling argument to self-sponsor just to be an Academy graduate (classified as a "lateral" at many hiring agencies).

Well, I went through the whole list, and as some of you suspected, most are not hiring. Yellowlab, I’ll be looking for those small agencies.
I actually found one agency that has 4 positions. However, the announcement said it was only for Laterals who are current working for another agency or recently laid off police officers.

SJPD is certainly no "second chance" department. I doubt anyone who was released by another agency would get very far in the process with them.

I'm no NorCal expert... not by a long shot. Isn't Pleasanton PD a "second chance" department?

I don't get the second chance concept, or the whole mystery thing with 'the list'. Why not just post it? Is it more effective if it's past around in secret?

So why is a list of departments that hire terminated officers secret? Is it like the thumb print on the trunk thing, where it's just fun 'not to tell'? No, I don't want the list. I'm just curious, and a bit embarrassed for the folks begging for a PM and the proud few who claim to have it, but guard it's contents (unless you want it PM'd in which case "Sure! I'll send it right over!") like ever vigilant keepers of 'the list'.

I don’t see anyone begging for the list, but I do see your pathetic self hatred leaking through… You’re the one who is “laid off”, seems like a case of projecting your own self-worth onto other peoples writing…

And passing along information is one of the things we do on this forum, and many people would rather spend their time and money on applying with departments that make the process easier rather than those that take many months or even years to hire.

HAVE THE BEST DAY EVER!

Oh I totally agree with what you are saying. All of this nonsense cannot go on much longer.

Don't get mad at me for having an opinion. If you want to get all emo about it and try to read into my life then start a new thread. You can call it "I'm Code-Pink over RNM", or something. You read a post about me being laid off. Nice. Maybe you can research some of my other posts and regurgitate them in an out of context kind way. Or just ask me for date, if that's what you're working up to.

You have good day too. :)

1. The economy is stopping service retirements since many of us have money in Deferred Comp accounts that have taken huge hits. I know many officers who have to put their retirement on hold.
2. POST's definition of a "lateral" is "off probation".
3. Laterals aren't always welcome by some departments. They may be trained but they also bring baggage and bad habits.

I think the list of "second chance" departments should be posted. That way, the people who haven't gotten "probationary releases" know where not to apply. This profession isn't for everyone, and it's a fact of life that some people just need to find a new career field.
