View Full Version : San Diego County Sheriff
I am taking the Lateral test this Thursday. Does anyone out there on O.com work or know anything about this department?
Thanks,
Dave

Yes I do sir!
Good department. Limited jail or court time from what I hear. Everyone I've ever dealt with from that department was a professional. If they offer you a spot, I'd go for it if I were you. Good luck.

When is their switch from 3 at 50- to 3 at 55? That is going to halt any laterals from SDPD.

I don't think the county council has voted on our contract yet.

SDSO

How many laterals have they been hiring lately? Do any of you with SDSO think there is there a freeze on the horizon like sdpd?

Not sure of the lateral situation at all, so I won't even begin to tread those waters. I just finished my B.A. in December, and finally made the move to San Diego. I applied today with the SDSO and recieved this as a part of the emial (*NOTE*: This is not intended to be definitive information for anyone, AT ALL. This is just something I am sharing to all of the people wondering what the latest MIGHT BE with the SDSO. Those of you currently employed could probably have more insight).
"Be advised that, as of today, I know of no indications of imminent employment offers or sponsorships to any academy in the near future. I interpret this to be a budgetary related precaution; not to be confused with a "hiring freeze". This Department has established precautionary conditions in the past and has modified them thereafter. Therefore, I encourage you to continue your application efforts with the San Diego County Sheriff's Department. A successful investigation of a candidate's personal background, which might take up to nine months to complete, may place such candidate in a favorable and desirable readiness level for (possible) deputy sheriff vacancies anticipated for the year 2010."

SDSO made a point to let those of us currently involved in the hiring process know the same thing. They keep stressing that they are not on a "hiring freeze", yet they are not currently making any final offers for hire.
Can anyone here tell me the difference between a "budgetary related precaution" towards hiring anyone and a "hiring freeze?"
SDPD is also still actively processing possible new candidates in order to place them "in a favorable and desirable readiness level for (possible) vacancies anticipated for the year 2010." But, they are calling it a "hiring freeze."

Honestly, I rather wait out the budgetary freeze as opposed to getting on and getting laid off.
There are other states that have it way worse than Ca.; that is, as far as officers already on the job, being laid off. That just isn't right, esp. in places like Fl.

I was hired during a freeze 5 years ago...I think it's hard to say what's coming 'round the pike.

In NorCal we have 'down the pike' and 'around the bend', but we never mix them. That is like a swap meet vs. flea market thing, I guess. :)
