I just heard (second-hand) from a deputy chief's adjutant that the City of Los Angeles will be short some 130 million dollars in salary to pay their cops. They're going to be asking police officers to join civilians in taking 20 furlough days per year. Can you LAPD active guys verify this?

Classes will only be filled on a one-to-one basis, one hire for each retirement/resignation/termination. The dream of 10,000 cops will not be met anytime soon.

If any of this is true, you guys stay safe out there...always!

Hi Kieth,

From everything I've been hearing, it's civilian only on the furlough days. This is the first I've heard any mention of sworn doing it too. I hope this is a mistake!

I have heard of the hiring to attrition only, which really does make sense with what's been going on financially.

I have been dealing with the civilian furlough plan for the past few weeks. I finally got ATSB to allow staggered furlough days for records so we don't go without critical line operations support.

I have not heard a single mention of sworn furlough days-- this would quickly backfire, as we scarcely have enough officers to effectively staff patrol operations as it is. A more realistic situation would be the immediate halt to overtime.

I for one would be happy to take furlough days though. I work hard enough as it is. :D

I heard it too. I had to call the Recruit Coordination Unit the other day to ask about the status of a CPA. I was told by Sgt. Jim K. that they were still planning on running at least 40 recruits through a month to manage attrition. However, no one knows what will happen after the new fiscal year in July. I believe that the Academy is downsizing operations for sure though-- I've received a handful of 1.40s from officers assigned to Training Division asking to come back to Patrol.

I'll ship all you need + vests et al( its not like they keep decent records here anyway) !!!!

LAPD will only backfill its routine losses( retirement, terminations, etc) from the academy, and LAXPD is kicking out the costly OT manned LAPD positions at the airport( still WITHOUT the #s to patrol adequately) Meanwhile Pacific div is still undermanned to conduct full patrols of the area,so of course ,who will backfill the outstanding calls? "no one". After 22 yrs,I still can't help but wonder that IF the city leaders had "thought" harder about saving $$$ when we were in "flush times", that we wouldn't have to go this route....

I don't ever remember LA being "flush" with money. It's always been "rob Peter to pay Paul."

Oh there was always plenty of money to throw away....remember when Mayor Hahn opened his "Office of Immigrant Affairs" meant to acquaint City services to illegals, and tell them what they were entitled to?

All those Central American parades and festivals in Mac Park...all City fees waived for those organizations, while other people had to pay to play.

How about SOAR, the annual Staff Officer's Annual Retreat, held and Big bear and later Ventura...gathering together all our top minds in manegement to think up new ways to screw with the troops. West Point Leadership? Excellent use of time and money. What did we get out of that, anyone who might have found ways to save money? Nooooooooo.

Yes, sound management at the top, throughout the City.

Still the fact that LAPD is able to hire 40 a month is really a good deal. On pretty much all of the Central Coast and the Bay area everything is hiring frozen like the ice age.

And almost the entire east coast as well.

Here's some perspective for you..... Our Division is poised to send upwards of 75 officers for the Lakers Victory Parade. We are but one of 20 Patrol Divisions in the City along with 4 Traffic Divisions and numerous specialized divisions. The last count I heard was that in excess of 1,400 officers would be utilized for this event. This does not include normal patrol activities for this day.

1,400 officers for an entire day on a singular event such as this is a lot of bones. LA has no money.. don't forget.

Sounds like the City really has their priorities in order! (I'm soooo glad I moved out of L.A.!)

I just heard the parade route. Staples Center to the Sports Arena.

All sorts of LAPD fans along that path!

Helmets, face shields, and protective cups, everyone!

Let's hope there's still one set of blue steel testes, among those wearing bars and stars, left to run the show.

My BG investigator informed me last week that all sworn LAPD officers will not be taking furlough days.

.. and remember , if an officer goes "stick time" on a "fan" throwing one of those "innocent" plastic water bottles, BOOK the bottle and its FROZEN contents ( in the freezer) to show it was a legit ADW on a P.O.......

Talked to one of the guys at the League yesterday..he told me that they are pushing to freeze hiring. It costs 128,000, to train one recruit then another 45,000 to get them through probation (salary / benefits not included). They need something like 750 to reach the magic 10,000 with the scheduled retirements. If they freeze hiring it will (according to the league) make up 1/2-2/3 of the budget defecit. The next step if that doesn't stop the beast is either to start taking un-paid days off (furlough) or to lay off 400 probationers/ recruits. They said if they stop putting recruits through they can free up personell from training and recruitment and help backfill some of the loss in patrol divisions.

Oh and the Laker parade sucked today...

I personally take all this with a grain of salt however because the rumor mill has been in hyper drive the past 2 weeks.

Yeah thats the first time I have heard anything about layoffs of recruits. From what background investigators have said and such they want 40 recruits per academy from here on out just to replace who retires etc.

If they stop hiring to replace the retired guys the mayor's proposal of 10,000 was worthless then.

cutting the #s is a last ditch thing- and Furloughs won't work either( officers will end up making Overtime $$$$,which will put the City even further in the red).and the Admin/ support personnel? alot are on the "gimp" and wouldn't be useful in patrol

Oh and the Laker parade sucked today...

Heard from Officers deployed and people who went- Mayor "tony Vato" and ghetto pimps like Jan Perry, and "cut the salaries but let me continue to make $500K/ yr" Bernard Parks were taking "credit" for bringing the Lakers parade to the "unwashed masses"-

Quite frankly -NOBODY knows what will happen until the "lights go out", and every "hood superstar" , and registered sex offender "paletas cart pusher" burns this city to the ground...

(as quoted from the words of a comic book hero, "They will look up and cry , save us, and I will look down and say NO".............)

So true So true.... The consensus amongst the lowly P-2 and P-3 types is to stop hiring. They are alot of money there...... but in realty I know that we are just props for the politicians...

As for burning the city down...ya its about time for one of those episodes of "civil unrest"......

..meanwhile at the LAX plantation, our bubble headed civie management is charging forward to spend $128 Million on a parking lot( Thought All the city depts were BROKE? "think again"),all the while WHINING that paying for all those "useless" Airport Cops and all that "unneeded extra LAPD personnel" makes NO sense( maybe when several grannies are robbed in the parking lots, or Brattons prediction of a smoke cloud popping up from where the Air terminals used to be might change their minds)

Sad fact- the parking lot in question was actually available to the City- Airports under eminent domain when it was little more than a decrepit former cold war tech factory, and for dirt CHEAP. ( Why buy it and use it for capital improvements????).The cost to purchase now will be MORE than the purported revenue the lot will generate. Just imagine - for once- IF our city managers actually ran things with some semblance of fiscal correctness....( that $128 million could pay for cops, firefighters, parks and clean streets)
