Hey all

looking for some answers that I have gotten some mixed results on. I was just laid off and was wondering if you can attend a private academy while on unemployment. This seems like a good time to get your basic POST. I know there have been some recent changes involved with the stimulus which changed the fact you are now be able to attend school for additional training while on Unemployment? Anyone know the facts? Thanks

Were you thinking of sponsoring yourself? If you have a ton of money set aside that's not bad thinking. But if you have just been laid off it might not be the best decision.

No you can not attend the academy while on unemployment. I was in the Academy self sponsored for 6 weeks on unemployment then the EDD said that I am not allowed to collect unemployment while in this specific program because its 40 hours a week and they cut my pay and I had to drop out of the academy after 6 weeks. Thats the official answer. I've been through the situation, last October.

As far as the CA EDD is concerned, you must keep looking for work during business hours 7am-6pm, so anything that falls in that timeframe will not usually work. They want you by the phone, READY to work at a moment's notice. You will have to fill out a claim form and sometimes they will check mark a box if they want you to fill-in the places where you have applied.

If law enforcement is not your current profession, they will not help as well. They do sponsor a few work re-training programs (all non-LE), but those programs are about to go kaput very soon with the budget crunch.

As far as I know, the economy has not changed anything relating to these stipulations for claiming unemployment benefits.

You might look into an extended modular academy, as most of the hours fall past the time frame.

I know of people that went self sponsored collected the GI Bill and Unemployment after they got out of the military and graduated but if you got caught I would imagine you would have to pay up.

If they get caught, they can kiss their candidacy for law enforcement bye-bye.

You have to do some research.

You CAN goto the academy and get umemployment, but the academy must be on the ETPL (California's Eligible Training Provider List),
you must qualify for CTB (California Training Benefits), at the onset of your unemployment benefits have to have told EDD that you 'might' seek continuing education.

Once you start, you'll be required to check the box that you've started school or training. At that point all benefits stop and you'll be scheduled for phone interview. If the interviewer determines that you meet all requirements the checks will flow, but if they determine that you are not - the cash will stop. And don't even think of gaming the system. They'll find out - And then your BI will find out, and as Avalon says...kiss it all goodbye.

The kicker is that you cannot know if you qualify for CTB until after you have already enrolled in school. It's a crazy system. If your only source of income is unemployment checks then I'd be cautious.

The list is located here (http://etpl.edd.ca.gov/wiaetplind.htm). Not sure where you are at, but places like The Academy at Evergreen Community College and The Basic Police Officer Academy in Santa Rosa are listed. Some junk down south also.

None of the academies in my area (San Diego County) are on the list...but I just checked and you COULD get assistance to become a "massage therapist". Is it me, or has society completely flipped their lid?

What about Huntington Beach (http://etpl.edd.ca.gov/WiaEtplDetails.asp?subgrnte_cd=ORA&cpw=72q5a692d000&st_pgm_cd=43010712300000)? You might just contact your local Sheriff's Department. Ask if they want to get listed. It only takes a week for it to happen (so says the EDD). I contacted my Sheriff, spoke to a SGT and he passed on to the regional training center LT, I should know next week if they want to get listed.

I inquired at my local 'one stop career shop', or whatever the name is (it's the place the EDD sends you for job help) - They said nobody has every asked to do such a thing. Usually it's crap like massages or Microsoft certification.

I've tried everything. I wrote a letter to Arnold asking him to sponsor me - No reply. I wrote a letter to my mayor and city council - No reply. It's the suck. I might start buying super lotto tickets.

Another thing to keep in mind...they might not approve of you getting re-training in a different profession. I was surprised at how much flack I got when I told them I wanted to leave IT for law enforcement. Reply? Denied.

Thanks for the responses everyone. Good info. I am definitely not trying to cheat the system, this will be the first time I have ever been laid off or collect unemployment if it comes to that. I too want to get out of IT; I thought it was what I wanted to do with my life. I was soo wrong.
