LT - All of the GW I work with are talking about trying to avoid layoffs and how they've been asked to furlough an additional day....what gives with there being money for testing and hiring?!?

Ditto. I thought CA was hurting for money even more than other states.

I went to boat school at FLETC with a CA Game Warden and he loved his job, went 10-8 from the house, worked out of his rig, spent a LOT of time on the water (though this was in Norcal somewhere - I'm sure the duties vary by region).

FWIW - the former SAC of the USFWS office in Denver and author of the "Wildlife Wars" book series - Terry Grosz - started his career with CA F&G. Lots of details in the earliest books about setting up the "fake" deer for nighttime poachers and doing a lot of waterfowl work. Good reads for anyone interested in the field, in general.

Can't answer as to their basic academy, but CA F&G used to run a UC workshop in th Bay area for covert wildlife investigations which was pretty high speed.

I don't know. The process takes a year or better so I could only guess. Maybe those in the academy now were budgeted for when money was good and someone thinks it will be good again when the next class or two go through.

It's gone back and forth over the years but I think it is back on the more strict side. It was originally set up modeled after the "San Jose PD" style by a former CHP officer. When I compared notes with CHP officers it seemed to be identical. I get to oversee FTO cycles and I can say that last year's group of hires came out with tight screws and were ready to work. The Camp Snoopy days were short-lived and long gone. Our physical test does make you swim and your color vision must be perfect too.

That describes 98% of us, except for the water part.

You wouldn't believe how fun those are. The central coast squad has a pig decoy mounted on tracks. In foot-tall grass it can't be resisted.

Yeah, I've done some of those with the guys in WA. It kinda reminds me of playing cowboys and indians at night when I was a kid, waiting to spring the ambush on some unsuspecting mope who won't know whether to shi% or go blind when he finally gets caught.

The funniest times are when some guy is standing there, bathed in flashing blue lights, but keeps looking over his shoulder, wondering why the plastic buck still won't go down :D.

The comments are priceless:
"Son- shoot the doe." (we had both that night)
"Hurry up man- he's walking away"
"How did you train that deer to just stand there?"
"Oh man! It's a 4-pointer". (It was a spike)
"Wouldn't that be funny if it was one of those robo-deer?"
:D

It's even better when someone thinks they're being clever by using a bow: the arrow is still sticking out of it, then those same kinds of comments keep coming.

"It's a well-disciplined deer, sir...specially trained"

We had a guy do a 30 yard low-crawl with the arrow in his teeth and the bow on his back. When he finally got close enough and took the shot he stuck it right in the 10-ring. After the instinctive motionless period he just sat the bow down and put both hands over his head. The DA still has a copy of the tape and plays it at DA functions.

I'm definitely interested, but am struggling a little bit with the education requirements.

Equivalent to completion of two years (60 semester units) of college with 18 semester units in the biological sciences, police science or law enforcement, natural resources conservation, ecology or related fields.
The Department has determined that “related fields” are but are not limited to: Animal Science, botany, chemistry, conservation, ecology, entomology, environmental management, environmental science, environmental studies, fisheries or wildlife management, forestry, geography, geology, herpetology, life science, mammalogy, marine biology, natural resources, oceanography, ornithology, physics, psychology, plant taxonomy, water quality management, wilderness survival and zoology.

I have an associates degree, and am working on my Bachelors, but I wouldn't have taken most of those classes. I guess I could apply, and list the closest classes I have, and hope for the best.

I'm pretty sure I will be one of the very few out of state applicants applying!

So did anybody on here (other than me) apply for the entry-level (cadet) announcement that closed last week??
