Has anyone seen the advertisements for the new Uncle Mikes holster that uses a fingerprint to release the weapon? Any opinions?
Technology is good, but can go too far, sometimes "simple" is the better and more effective way to go.

That's right up there with the magnetic ring gizmo that was touted a few years back. I am willing to bet that the individual that dreamed this holster up has never worked on the street. I am not carrying anything that is battery dependant except a flashlight. I carry two of those as it is a 6P and Maglite.

The holster can store sixty-four images in its memory. This would allow an officer to enter all of his or her own fingerprints, as well as those of several other people.
The power source is AAA batteries backed up by a disc-like power cell. There is a mechanical override to these systems which will still allow the holster to function if both power sources are down. This override is designed to be difficult to accomplish to maintain the retention characteristics of the holster.
Supposedly the holster will function if your hand is covered with mud or blood and if you have a bandage on your finger. To my knowledge, no one has considered if it will operate if an officer is wearing gloves, latex or otherwise.
There's an article on the holster in the current issue of Police Marksman. Be safe.
