Does anyone have any input on this senario? The position is Corrections Officer, within a police department. Is this common?
For a second there I thought my post got deleted.
I am from WA but anyway. One of the guys I work with used to be a C/O for one of our local PD's. One city has a 30 day holding facility, one has (well had until the budget cuts, now they contract with 2 different jails) a long term standard jail, and the third city just rents beds at the county jail. It really depends on what kind of facility they are. I love the transport aspect of Corrections, you get to see all kinds of different facilities and such. If you want to be a police officer this could be a very good stepping stone.

NO KJB...post not deleted...I had posted it over there and then realized its a closed (LEO Only) forum....thanks for your info..In the economic condition, I am trying to think outside the box. I think I might enjoy it. This is the first local PD I have seen that posted this type of opening.

It's pretty common for agencies that have their own lock-ups. LAPD has "detention officers", Long Beach PD nowadays called them "special services officers" that work the jail among other assignments. Some contract out staff for the lock-ups, usually small facilities. Last I heard Irvine PD contracts out with a security company.

For some PD, yes. Riverside SO is one that comes to mind.

Santa Monica PD has "jailers". (Truth in advertising! :))

This position was for Anaheim P.D. It closed yesterday, just trying to get some type of input.

this position is quite common. some departments have their own jailers/COs/detention officers, etc. some agencies contract detention duties out to private security like wackenhut. at least that is what my former agency did. as for training and certifications, i don't know. I went to anaheim PD a few times to drop off some peoples and saw the COs there. they had empty holsters. so i assume they get some sort of corrections training and can carry. but i'm not 100% on this. i'm assuming they carry on duty when they transport prisoners.

Many medium to large city PD's employ such positions. Some cities in CA also run Community Correctional Facilities that are a contracted arm of the state prison system. These facilities can employee city employed correctional officers.
