View Full Version : Thoughs on Nylon Gear

Currently we are not allowed to wear nylon duty gear except for the M/C units and Marine patrols. When I did propose it the boss said it looks bad. The old nylon gear did have a tendency to grey and get dull looking after a short time. That was about 5 years ago.
What experiences can you relate as far as appearance and durability, care and upkeep. General thoughts on how it stacks up against leather. If there are favorable reports I'll try again.

I used Nylok, but I still like the look of leather, it is just a material, but I think it should be the only one used with exception of swat and marine duties. It is lighter, but it looks bad, less professional. I tend to notice on our guys, that if you were leather, you carry yourself and your uniform looks better than the ones who use the lighter nylon and lower maintainance type uniforms.
Real cops wear leather. Real cops drink their coffee black too! http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
whadyamean all the swat teams are using nylon, damn, I'm glad i retired when i did!

Guard dog, simply answer buddy.........
Uncle Mike's Mirage gear. You can get it in basketweave, with a belt that looks just like your leather Sam Browne nad honestly, you can't tell the difference when looking at it. It has all the advantages of nylon (light weight etc) and is only priced about $3 more per item than the regular nylon.
Take a hard look at it, I'm telling you that you could wear it around and nobody would notice it.
Don:
Is a guy that drinks black coffee but wears nylon kind of a half-assed cop? http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Our department a couple of years ago give officers the choice of nylon or leather. After wearing leather for 10 plus years I changed to the Accumold from Bianchi. I love it. I think that it is more confortable and after two years it still looks great. It is like evrything else, you will need to replace worn or damaged pieces, just like the leather gear if you don't it looks unprofessional. I would say half of our department's officers (90 total sworn officers) wear the nylon over the leather for the same reasons as above.

I'm a leather fan myself, but reccommed Uncle Mike's Mirage gear if you choose nylon.

Well this topic is timely for me. I currently have a Safariland B/W rig. Here in Hooterville it does not matter. The department I am currently going thru the process for has a clear policy that states "no nylon, plain black leather OR Mirage ONLY". Guess I will look into it. Too bad I dropped a bundle on this basket weave already. Is the Mirage any less $$$ than leather? (edited because Nite already answered this question)

I, like Sgt DG644, switched to the Accumold a couple of years ago. We can wear either leather or nylon but must maintain the leather for a class "A" uniform. I was recluctant to change after 25 years, but find the nylon much easier on the back. I don't know why but it just seems so. It also is much quiter than leather. I WILL NOT go to the BDU type uniforms though. There is a limit. http://www.officer.com/ubb/eek.gif

We've got nylon now...I was pleasantly surprised at the longevity of it(Bianchi) and the appearance. We're getting ready to go to a Safariland B/W rig real soon. It's not much of a difference in weight, but looks much better with Class A's. Of course with the boat anchor 4046's, it doesn't matter how heavy the rig is.
I want BDU's, I like my nylon and I don't drink coffee...I've got a complex now.

Maybe it's about time to find and revive the old thread "Are You a Real Cop?". I guess I need some verification in my life!

We have been wearing Uncle Mikes nylon for 5 years. Love it, it is so comfortable. It does not squeak, it does not glow in the dark and our extra money is spent on capucino ha ha.
If anyone knows of any studys, I think the back injury/complaints are decreased also.
