Hey guys, I was wondering if you could give me some insight. Back in 2006 I applied for a local police department at the ripe old age of 20. I was hired and attended the academy for 16 weeks (out of 26) and was forced to drop out due to a family emergency.

I was still living at home with my parents and my mom caught my dad having an affair on her with a minor. It was an ugly situation (dad was a Pastor at a church etc. etc. I'll save the gory details). Due to this both of my parents became suicidal and the girl went to the police and they were investigating my dad. I dropped out due to the stresses of dealing with my parents and being an adult child I wanted to make sure they were taken care of and given proper treatment (counseling and a time of seperation).

Fast forward to the present, I am currently in the background phase with antoher (different) local police department and I explained to them what happened to me and why I dropped out of the last academy. I made sure everything was straightened out in my life before I applied to this department (my parents are actually still together and happier than I've ever seen them).

Does this hurt my chances? I worked for a local law firm for 2 years prior to being hired by the first police department and I got rehired there and have worked there ever since I left. I'm 22 now and I also got my Associate's degree since leaving the academy. Any insight would be great! Thanks.

Hi, Null. Greetings from Hampton.

If things are as you said they are, I don't think you have much to worry about. You displayed care for your parents in an unfathomable situation. You were stressed. Who wouldn't be? The big worry to me would be if you didn't care. Move on with your life with confidence.

All the best.
