I'm 28 years old now. I have never regularly smoked weed but on a road trip with some friends I decided what the heck and did it. That was about 3 years ago. When I was younger I did the kid things like stealing packs of gum from the store and other things that I could have gotten arrested for. I've driven under the influence of alcohol just about everytime I go out. I guess what i'm trying to say is that I've done some bad things in the past. All when I was in my early to late teens. Since then, I've changed, went to college, started a family and has been a model citizen. When I look at most agencies questionairres they ask those "have you ever" type questions that make me think that they won't hire me. Having done stuff way back then won't prohibit me from being an officer will it?

no. because no one is an angel and has a clean background. the marijuana might or might not be an issue. it was 3 years ago so that is a plus. however, you tried drugs when you were a mature adult (at 25 yrs) which is negative. it's different if you were in high school or college.

and it doesn't sound too good that you've driven under the influence everytime you go out. and that you're underage, and might have an alcohol problem if you constantly are drunk driving.

Driving while intoxicated will not help you with any agency! The last thing they want is to have you in an accident either on or off duty with alcohol involvment.

In all honesty, the only true answer you will get is from the agency you apply to. Just look at some of the cops out there now....They get hired and go on to commit crimes, are corrput, violate rights etc......so sure give it a go and see what happens.

Some depts wont even look at you. Those that will expect that you have disclosed all information about all these incidents in your screening paperwork before the BC starts. It just leaves you no room for error and those that have a better or cleaner background it is still tough for them with the amount of applicants out there today. It will be tough and good luck. If you dont make it keep trying.

"I've driven under the influence just about every time I go out". That, my friend, is a very devastating statement. I can only hope that it no longer applies. As a part of your Background Package you'll be asked if you've ever commited a crime/offense for which you were neither arrested or tried. These statements/admissions are very often asked again on a Polygraph Exam. Each agency has basic employment standards, as well as standards or criteria for Disqualification. The basic purpose of any Background is actually twofold. On the one hand, the investigation determines whether or not you meet the basic qualifications for employment. OTH, the investigation also seeks to determine whether or not you meet the criteria for Disqualification. It's virtually impossible for me to say whether or not you'd be hired. That's up to the agency you apply to.
