I thought my police academy experience was comprehensive--at least until I saw this officer apply a unique baton technique:

I think the little prance she does just before applying said technique is the secret.

When Heather Locklear said "hooker taught me - it makes up for my size", I had to stay sitting down for a while.

Exactly. If she wanted to tackle me and put me in cuffs, SO BE IT!
Hey she stole my baton trick! I use it all the time cuz, you know, it kinda makes up for my size. :p But it does drive me crazy when that music plays every time we chase someone !

Thus Heather Locklear's good fit with the show.

Years ago, one of my coworkers threw his stick at a guy who ran. At night. On the beach. He got away, and a couple of us spent the next hour with him searching the beach for his baton.

Now you see why Aussie cops all carry boomerangs instead of batons. They also come in handy when they round up the odd lost kangaroo bounding along George Street in Sydney.

Side Handle
* One-piece, super-strong unit
* Can be used as throwing device
* Side design is effective for executing a variety of both offensive and defensive maneuvers
* Constructed of ABS plastic or polycarbonate
* Sturdy handle provides sure grip
http://www.galls.com/baton2.html
:confused::D
Also...
Steel
* Great for use anywhere, but may rust in humid or wet regions
* Available in expandable styles
It sure would suck to get RUST in a expandable baton!

Showing my age, but long before that show was aired, I saw that on "Joe Forrester", and on a show of "Enos."
Watch that video again- you'll see that it hit the guy in the side of the leg. That wouldn't bring somebody down. More than likely p*ss him off, and perhaps even take that baton and come back at you with it!
Believe it or not, the trick of throwing your baton at someone fleeing from you will work, but it takes just the right timing, and good accuracy in the throw. And throw low; the ideal target is the ankles. When the baton hits one ankle, it will snap around and smack the other ankle, causing your fleeing person to stumble, and lose their balance, causing them to trip and fall. Along the same principle as playing football in the park, and stubbing your toe in a gopher hole, or running through the woods, and tripping over a limb lying on the ground that you didn't see.
I read some years back where this puke was being pursued by LE at this rodeo in Texas, when a mounted officer came charging up on his horse, and caught the perp with his lariat! At least he didn't brand him and castarate him for good measure!:D
One thing I have always idly wondered would be of any use in LE work is what's known as a "bola." Mainly used by the gauchos in Argentina, both as a hunting tool for hunting the rhea(small bird related to the ostrich), and instead of a lariat for rounding up cattle. Basically 2 or 3 long cords attached to a throwing handle, with heavy stones at the end of each cord. I made one once, and it is a bit of a trick to learn to throw, but once you do, pretty easy, and effective. An effective throw will go quite a ways, and once thrown, the weights will make the cords open wide, and when they hit the target, wrap around it rapidly. That, added with the weight of the "stones", will send any man or beast tumbling head over heels! I once took down a full grown rogue cow with one; one throw, tied her front legs together, and she went sliding. By the time she managed to kick herself free, we got the broken fence fixed, and she decided she'd had enough, and ran back to where she belonged.
On the down side; I could effectively catch some fleeing scumbag; wrap that around his ankles, and he goes sliding on his face on the pavement for however long. There would be those bleeding hearts who will cry excessive force, despite the crime he was being pursued for.

Nowdays when police get a cop killer and hit the suspect with a baton it's excessive force.:mad:
There are two bad thing about throwing batons. If you miss you will most likely lose it or when you caught up with the suspect you don't have it anymore with you and even if you hit with it and the suspect lands next to it the suspect may use it against the officer. Then if you use lethal force and the question "How did the suspect get your baton?" comes up it will fun answering it. "Sir I threw it!":D

Whenever I watch that show I try to look at it as Captain Kirk having got stuck in the 20th century, and trying to make the best of the situation, becoming a PO and parking himself next to Heather Locklear.

Back in '65, we had a London Bobby give us some training with our 'new' Monadnocks. Seems that then, Bobbys didn't carry sidearms...all they had was the stick, and boy....could they ever use it. He took me down at 40 yards, and I hobbled for three days afterwards. As he taught it, not only is the trick to keep it low, but to use the ground itself (pavement, etc.) like skipping a stone on water.
About a year later, I had two German Statspolizei ride with me for a week, and they were real bears with their shorter sticks...and not nearly as nice!

Yeah...um...I'm not sure I want to be tossing weapons to a 'no' person.
I will say, though, that I have used the 'heel-kick' on one fleeing suspect. Just a light sideways kick at the feet while he was running away, and I hardly connected. Worked like a charm, and he skidded on his belly like a 747 with it's landing gear stuck up. I think I learned that in 4th grade

They great thing about this forum is that I always learn something--it never crossed my mind when I posted this video that readers would actually post perspectives that encouraged baton throwing. Interesting stuff...

I think even today only some special bobbys have weapons but most of the officers are unarmed in Britain e.g. if there's a bank robbery in progress they have to go to the police station to get weapons from lockers. In Finland some officers don't carry a weapon if they didn't make trough the firing range and some leave their weapon in their car when they make a traffic stop. Yeah... I know. Ridiculous AND dangerous.
But I certainly woulnd't be trhowing my baton at a suspect if I didn't freaking have a gun! What if the suspects picks the baton up after you miss?!
P.S. Nowdays most of the bobbys carry expandable batons.
