View Full Version : Another "What are my chances" thread
I know this topic gets beat to death, but I haven't seen my scenario in the archives.
I was arrested as a juvenile twice, once for possession of stolen property, and once for burglary (I stole a couple car stereos out of cars at a car dealership) they were both felonies.. This was 21 years ago. I've had 1 speeding ticket in 1994 for doing 65mph while towing a trailer.
So here I sit at age 37, never done drugs, stayed out of trouble since I was 16 wishing I could be a police officer.
I don't have a lot of regrets in my life, and I don't want to regret at least not trying to make this happen.
So I guess my question is - Should I give up this dream?
Thanks for your replies,
R
Were you convicted of those felonies?
I believe they use a different term for juveniles, but yes. 1 year of informal probation + restitution + community service.

Well I just talked to juvenile probation and they told me that there is no record of me in the system. This is due to my record being expunged and then destroyed after ?? years elapsed.
So, I guess I will have to contact a few BI's in the area I plan on applying and lay it out for them, see what kind of response I get.
Thanks,

Any person convicted of a felony (or of a crime in another jurisdiction that would be a felony in California) is prohibited from employment as a California peace officer [Government Code Section 1029(a)]. This prohibition holds even if the conviction was sealed, expunged, or set aside. It may also apply to any convictions that were subsequently reduced to a misdemeanor occurring on or after January 1, 2004.
Proceedings under juvenile court are generally not considered to be a criminal conviction under Government Code Section 1029 unless the individual was certified, tried and convicted as an adult. Therefore, juvenile convictions are not included as a legal bar to appointment as a peace officer. However, the conduct surrounding the offense should certainly be considered as part of
the overall background.

I dont know the laws or rules on this but if it were me, I would make some calls at the departments you are looking into and ask them about it and just try out anyways. You will never know until you try. Worse thing that will happen is they will say NO.
