View Full Version : is this lightbar ok?

bkc2009

what if i put an amber LED clear lense lighbar on top of my car and does not turn it on while driving, is that ok? because you know you can't determine what color it is going to flash with clear lenses lightbar without actually turning it on. will police pull me over just to see what color and can they do that?
I have got the answer I originally looking for already but if you want to blaze me because I ask controversial questions in different threads, you can continue to do that and say whatever you want.

and why on earth do you need a light bar of any sort on your vehicle?? What motivation do you have?

When I was assigned to our local high for four years I had a student in the school that had lights on his car. He would turn them on often. He said he did so to warn people of traffic crashes and such. I asked how the hell people would know what he is warning them about when he is drivng 5-10 miles away from an actual accident. He justified it in his mind. He ended up getting several tickets for it and then removed them.

Yes, that is absolutely ok. You should also make sure that you have an old CVPI, and make sure the spotlight is till in working condition and make sure that it's pointed at oncoming traffic all the time. You should probably get really dark tinted windows, push bars, maybe even a few antenna on the back. You can probably pick up an old cage somewhere too, be sure to throw that in the car. To finish off the ****** bag-ness of your new Mall Cop ride, be sure to get a hat that says POLICE on it and throw it in the back window.

You'll be well on your way to being the laughing stock of an entire profession then.

Keep your eyes on the prize.

I pulled this idiot over once who had a "computer mount" along with all the other trappings of wannabes. His mount was a metal pipe screwed into the floor of the car, a piece of plywood with velcro on it, and then his computer had velcro on the bottom of it to hold it in place.

A plastic orange on the arial tip and a blue fluffy piece of carpet on the dashboard will round off the this "idiot mobile" nicely !

On a more serious note. In my country it is illegal and prohibited to fit any type of lamp or lamp look alike to a vehicle used on a public road if that lamp is not required or allowed by the national traffic code - for private/civilian use no vehicle may be fitted with any other lamp than the lamps with which the vehicle model is homologated and certified when introduced for sale to the public.

The "starbar" described by this person will earn him an instant discontinue notice (written instruction to immediately remove the vehicle from the public road and not to use it again untill the "defect" has been rectified and certified as rectified by a registered motor vehicle roadworthy testing centre) together with a fine for the fitment of an illegal lamp on a vehicle used on a public road.

Failing to comply with a discontinue notice will result in arrest and impoundment of the vehicle.

In the Granite State that would now be PC (not just AS) to pull you over.

For amber lights you need to have a permit from the state DMV Director and be able to display such to any officer who requests to see it. (RSA 266:78-h, IX, and supporting Administrative Rules)

For emergency lights (blue, red) you need to have not only an official department ID to get the vehicle inspected but a letter from the Chief of the Department (whatever department you belong to...you do, don't you?) in the vehicle. That letter may be requested by any officer. Failure to have that letter is a violation.

Law went in to effect in September 2008 (RSA 266:78-o, II).

Why can't they just tax stupidity and save us decent people a ton of money?

I'm thinking we need a "Stupid Thread" tax in. Obviously, this would be in addition to the traffic fines the OP is already on his/her way to incurring...

Listen Kiddo,

I can't even believe I'm gonna try to level with you, but here it is:

It is very, very easy to ascertain from your two posts in this forum that you want to make your vehicle look like an emergency vehicle in order to potentially avoid tickets and/or look like a cop (which we call wannabes).

That you'd even consider this is a bad sign, however, I will be straight-up with you and tell you DO NOT DO THIS. You will only end up getting yourself in a LOT of trouble, as it won't be long before the cops where you live know exactly what you're up to, and then they'll actually be LOOKING for you.

Enough said.

I would like to be clear that I am not trying to do whatever you thinking I am trying to do because all I am simply asking is whether it is legal or not. You can choose to believe this or not as I no longer care. It appears that even if it is not illegal I will still get pull over and have all the troubles because all cops in this country(at least from what I have experienced on this forum)are sensitive to lightbars and think everyone with a lightbar is a "wannabe" with prejudice. For what reason would you want to put a lightbar on your vehicle.

OliverR
04-30-2009, 08:03 PM
Ehh-even if its not illegal, if you have no type of official capacity, such as a job that calls for it (School Security, Mall Security, Construction, something involving traffic clean up or part if your part of a civilian police offshoot [like we have the SFPD Patrol Specials] or patrol service) there is pretty much no reason to really have it-your just asking for cops to harass you, wondering what your doing with it in the first place-If I see one passing by Id definitely scratch my head and proceed with a plate running-we have had way to many incidents (here in SF) over the years of people with "yellow" lights being in the wrong place at the wrong time and trying to pull some macho crap that ends up getting them hurt or worse, pulling completely illegal activity, impersonating an officer and such-and who has to pick up the mess? Us.

Yeah, the OP won't come out and admit why he wants a lightbar. He claims to want it so that his car can look like a German safety patrol car.
Ehh yeah thats real good rational-it would be cool if you used it as a novelty car (like really made it to look like whatever that is and drive it at car shows and such) but thats a stretch to have it as your everyday driver..
Are you ready to give every officer that asks you about it that explanation? Id love to see their faces!

After all you MAY be first on scene of a crash and that would justify turning on the Amber Light , then your local police MAY not mind if you keep the vehicle there with the lights blazing to help warn people..
Don't forget you can also storm chase, plow roads, help out at construction scenes, help deliver mail and newspapers, escort oversize loads, chase news, haul trash.. Even though you are not paid or trained to do any of that..
