Low-level flight panics New York

New Yorkers were startled as the planes flew over the city's harbour
The White House has apologised after a low-level flight by a presidential jet and a fighter plane sparked panic among New York City office workers.

The half-hour flight triggered the evacuation of a number of office buildings in the city.

Pentagon officials said the fly past - a photographic exercise not involving President Obama - had been co-ordinated with city and state authorities.

No general public notification was issued in advance.

"While federal authorities took the proper steps to notify state and local authorities in New York and New Jersey, it's clear that the mission created confusion and disruption," Louis Caldera, director of the White House military office, said in a statement.

"I apologise and take responsibility for any distress that flight caused."

Correspondents say many New York residents are still scarred by the September 2001 attacks when airliners ploughed into the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington DC.

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he was "furious" about the incident, criticising those responsible for failing to warn the public.

"The good news is it was nothing more than an inconsiderate, badly conceived and insensitive photo op with the taxpayers' money," said Mr Bloomberg.

Wait... so Federal and State "authorities" were notified of the fly by before it happened... doesn't "Bloomberg" run the city that this occured? Wouldn't he know about it? wouldn't it be HIS responsiblity to notify HIS people about it?

You would think they would have the media at least run a short story on it to make the community aware of what's going on.

Just wasn't enough time. Doom and gloom first. Always.

Dbag....Mayor Bloomberg is a Municipal Official. The article does not assert that he was notified. Everyone with an interest in the matter should have been notified. That means the general Public should have been notified; not just the "authorities". The Public knows about the Air & Water Show in advance.

I stand corrected.

Figured if the PD gave it's blessing, it would involve the mayor...

Gov. should have informed mayor. NYPD should have known something was amiss. I just love how folks automatically blame it on the President and the current admin.....

You might be right, Justy. I notice the article mentions "local officials". I edited my post accordingly. Maybe they told the Police, and the Police didn't mention it to the Mayor so he could tell the Public. That would mean that his lines of communication with the Police are less than spectacularly good...

(I didn't mean anything more than a friendly acknowledgement of the past in using that informal name for you.)

Low-flying plane over Manhattan was insensitive, unnecessary7:43 PM EDT, April 27, 2009

Just in case government officials have managed somehow to forget, here's a reminder: New Yorkers now have very little tolerance for large, unexpected, noisy, window-rattling airplanes flying low over lower Manhattan.

That's what happened yesterday morning. A military aircraft, just like the one that's designated Air Force One when the president happens to be in it, zoomed over Manhattan. Accompanied by frightening friends, F-16 fighters, it flew as low as the windows of some skyscrapers. That threw a scare into Wall Street workers and briefly shook the stock market. Wall Street is jittery enough without being buzzed.

In late afternoon, a White House official apologized. It seems that the "mission" was all about obtaining an "iconic" image of the presidential aircraft. That little vanity exercise, which took place so close to Ground Zero, left Mayor Mike Bloomberg and President Barack Obama both furious.

The NYPD, which has its own tragic memories of the 9/11 events, knew about it in advance, but was instructed not to tell the public. It's hard to know which is more outrageous: the photo op itself or the secrecy that kept the public in the dark, despite the predictable fears of New Yorkers.

If they really had to do this flyover - and why do they need that kind of promotional image of the presidential plane, anyway? - it shouldn't have been a secret to anyone

:D

Sounds about right.

If the part about NYPD being instructed NOT to tell the public is true, then something is really wrong... Who the hell thought it was a good idea to have an airplane flying around the city that low? Especially after 9/11? Im not saying its Obama's fault... but jeeze Louise...
