I found this site today, and have enjoyed reading a lot of the postings. It is great to finally find a site that remains professional, and does not back stab each member over silly studid stuff. Everything I have read today has been positive and professional. I got into law enforcement at age 14 as an explorer with the Redding, Ca Police department explorer post#93 (listed on this site) and at age 16 I left RPD and went to the Shasta County SO explorer program. I joined the Army and left for basic training and AIT (MP School) 4 days after graduating high school. I couldn't wait to be a "cop", on the first day at Ft McClellan, AL I heard a voice say "I need 6 volunteers for a police call!" HUH? what? police work already? Ooooh, right here, pick me!! As luck would have it I was picked, and handed a plastic garbage bag. I soon learned that a "police call" had nothing to do with law enforcement, it was a garbage pick up detail. http://www.officer.com/ubb/frown.gif I also learned on that fateful day not to volunteer for anything, unless you know what you are volunteering for. After 4 great years of active duty in the US Army MP Corps, I left for "greener pastures". I thought for a time that law enforcement was not fot me, and went on to do many other jobs. Never being happy at this job or the other, I decided to return to LE. Currently, I am employed by the Feds as a Department of Defense police officer at Ft Sam Houston, TX. For anyone who has been here, you know I have a very coushy job. Thanks just the same, you can have your crime riden beat, i'll stay here. I am finally happy with my life and my career. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

You know, I can relate quite well to your post. But unlike you, I joined the Navy after high school. Needless to say it didn't take me long to figure out what the Navy meant (Never Again Volunteer Yourself). Anyway's, we are all glad to have you back as a leo and a new member of this forum. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

Well that does sort of sum up an awful lot of what we do. We collect the garbage and haul it off, we just don't use plastic bags, er usually that is.

When I was in the Army, I visited Ft. Sam Houston's hospital. You're right about it being a beautiful place and a good duty assignment! Plus, don't they train all the Army nurses there? http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

My friend was married to a British MP based in Hamburg. The MP's are very much different to the civvy police. My husband knows this as he used to work in Charing Cross PS in London and had to get the MPs to collect the drunken soldiers from the cells sometimes. A law unto themselves!!!! LOL!

Hi there DoD Police!! I'm fairly new myself, only finding this site a few months ago. Anyways, I live in Houston, so I know right where you're talking about. Actually, I'm kind of like you. I'm trying to find an explorer's program where I live. The small city I live in, West University Place, has a police department and used to have explorers, although they don't anymore. I've contacted the Houston Police Explorer's rep. and was emailing him for a while, but then he just stopped. Oh well, I'm still looking, but, hope you're having fun at Ft. Sam Houston and not doing too much work http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
