I've been a U.S. Border Patrol Agent on both southern and northern continental US borders for the past 15 years. I'd be particularly interested in talking with Border Guards, etc., from other countries. I have instructed firearms, Spanish, and bike and ATV patrols, and worked in the San Diego, CA and Olympic Peninsula of WA State, as well as nasty desert locations. I also do recruiting, if anyone needs info on employment with the patrol.

Welcom to officer.com, John. There's a few Feds in here. I'm in VT, just south of the Canadian border, so I do quite a bit with the BP fellows here.
Please jump in wherever you like, and feel free to email any of the staff if we can be of any assistance.
I'd talk to you about recruiting, but I passed the magic number last Nov. http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Be safe,

Hello ME,
You have to be scheduled to attend our Academy before you've reached your 37th birthday. That's because the current mandatory retirement age is 57, and you have to put in at least 20 years to qualify for the benefits. If you're young, you can retire at any age with 25 years of service, so a 21 year old can retire at 46 if they wished, and still have a life after patrol.

Thanks for the welcome, Connie. We're practically neighbors! I rented in Happy Valley for four months while I sought a permanent shelter on this side of the peninsula...ended up on the West Side of PA.
I miss the elk herd which used to routinely cross the pasture in back of the house. Did a Sequim PD unit really hit one of those big ole boys? I've had a couple of close encounters with deer while patrolling 101, but I imagine it would be curtains for the driver who centerpunches one of those Roosevelt Elk at speed. http://www.officer.com/ubb/eek.gif
What a magnificent area this is...I feel fortunate to be here, especially having taken the transfer sight unseen. I've been here long enuf now to be able to refrain from saying "See-quim".
Regards,
John

Hi John,
WELCOME to the Olympic Penninsula, it's nice to have you as a neighbor.
>>I miss the elk herd which used to routinely cross the pasture in back of the house. Did a Sequim PD unit really hit one of those big ole boys?>>
As a matter of fact one of our officers did hit an elk while driving his pickup on Happy Valley road. He came out of it unscathed but the elk was thrown into the air and landed on top of a man riding a bicycle. Poor man was almost killed. http://www.officer.com/ubb/frown.gif I wonder what he told his insurance co. "Bicycle trashed and severe injuries caused by flying elk."
A Harley driver hit one on 101. http://www.officer.com/ubb/eek.gif
The elk don't just pass by our house, they stop and eat the fruit off the trees, lay around the yard, on the patio and under the deck. http://www.officer.com/ubb/eek.gif If you happen to see a crazy lady walking behind the herd with a big stick, it's probably me. http://www.officer.com/ubb/wink.gif Btw, we have two herds.
LOL @ See-quim! Learning the proper pronunciation is part of the initiation. http://www.officer.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Stay safe and keep a sharp eye out for Bambi on 101 .

MigraJohn,
My information on the officer who hit the elk was wrong. He didn't hit it with his truck, he was driving his patrol car. Watch CNN today. There's a segment on our elk and shows the officer's car after the accident.

I recommend 9-12 months before your ETS date. You can get more information at:
