I'm 21 and still in school now but I have several questions about HPD. On the HPD site, it says that with a college degree you'll have the opportunity to be promoted 2 years earlier than without one. But what college degree are they talking about? Is an Associates degree enough or Bachelors? And is there different pay between one and the other? Thanks for your time guys, really appreciate it.

As far as I understand it is a bachelors degree in anything. promotion beyond Lt. requires a Masters.

So no benefits from AA then? Damn...I just wanted to get into it already as soon as they open up for applications again. So damn impatient haha.

All degrees have some benefit just as all education is of benefit. Go apply and things will work out! Even after you are working, you can continue your education and finish the labors for a higher degree. Good luck!!!

As of right now, there will be no new hiring until the economy gets better. If HPD takes the Fed. Stimulas pack, they might be able to pick up about 150 policeofficers on the Feds paycheck for the next 4 or 5 years, after which point they become city employees, but that still remains to be seen.

As of July 2010, the starting pay for rew recurits will be $50K a year, and believe me, thats a hell of alot better than it was when I first came on board back in the early 70's.

Oahu, Hawaii, Maui, and Kauai, 4 different counties, 4 seperate police departments and chiefs, but ONE bargining unit and contract for all 4 of them.

Nice place to work, especially if you get to look at some big waves at the North Shore along with the beach bunnies.

How is the cost of living ???,, What does the average house go for ?

from what i understand 50K per year is not a lot for a place where GAS and milk go for 2+ X what they are on the mainland.

But I know the pineapple and macadamia nuts are cheap. LOL
