An Orange County Sheriff's deputy is locked up today on suspicion of raping a child under age 14, Riverside County Sheriff's and jail officials said.

Deputy Wilbert Dale Garcia, 49, was arrested about 4 p.m. Friday during a traffic stop in Murrieta, and remains locked up today.

"He was arrested following an investigation," said Riverside County Sheriff's Deputy Matt Diaz in a phone interview. "He was a 19-year veteran of law enforcement."

Garcia was held today on three offenses — one count of continual sexual abuse of a child and two counts of aggravated child sexual assault, a jailer said in a phone interview.

“The Wildomar Police Department is not releasing the protected identity of the victim in this investigation,” Diaz said in a statement. He said deputies “are reviewing evidence in this continuing investigation to determine if other victims exist.”

Orange County Sheriff's personnel were on hand to take Garcia into custody as his car was stopped at the corner of Washington Avenue at Nutmeg Street in Murrieta. The primary agency on the arrest was Riverside County Sheriff's deputies, who act as city police for Wildomar, a city in southwest Riverside County.

Garcia remained locked up today on $250,000 bail, sheriff's and jail officials said. Garcia has been placed on administrative leave and the OC Sheriff's is beginning its own personnel investigation.

"It's disturbing when anyone gets arrested for the crimes alleged," said Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino. "It's especially disturbing when it's a law enforcement officer."

Amormino said Garcia had been stationed as a patrol deputy in South County and has spent his 19 years in law enforcement as an Orange County deputy.

"We are definitely cooperating fully with the Riverside County Sheriff's Department," Amormino said.

Why would OC Sheriff's come down to arrest him if the crimes took place in Wildomar?

Why would OC Sheriff's come down to arrest him if the crimes took place in Wildomar?

Although the article seems to read that way, I don't think that's the case. More likely than not, OCSD was on scene as, a) observers, b) a familiar face should the arrest attempt turn into a stand off situation, c) both.

RSO arrested him but OC had people present.

ON-DUTY ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY FOUND DEAD AFTER BEING CHARGED WITH MOLESTING 12-YEAR-OLD BOY HE MET THROUGH BIG BROTHERS OF ORANGE COUNTY FROM 1995 TO 1997

SANTA ANA - An on-duty deputy of the Orange County Sheriff's Department (OCSD) was found dead yesterday after charges were filed against him for molesting a 12-year-old boy for two years more than a decade ago after meeting the victim and his older brother through Big Brothers Big Sisters of Orange County. Gerald Stenger, 41, Aliso Viejo, was charged yesterday morning with one felony count of lewd acts on a child under 14 and one felony count of continuous sexual abuse with a sentencing enhancement allegation for substantial sexual conduct. He would have faced a maximum sentence of 18 years in state prison if convicted.

The Orange County District Attorney's Office (OCDA) conducted an investigation and obtained information that the defendant may be a suicide risk. Based on that information, the OCDA took precautions to protect the safety of the defendant and other persons, including sealing all case related documents to prevent him from learning about his pending arrest. The OCDA obtained a no bail warrant and worked with the OCSD to coordinate a safe arrest.

OCDA investigators planned to arrest Stenger at the OCSD facilities in Santa Ana yesterday afternoon. At approximately 2:00 p.m. in a parking structure at 26681 Aliso Creek Drive in Aliso Viejo, Stenger was found with a single gun shot wound to the head in the driver's seat of an unmarked Crown Victoria patrol car. OCSD deputies had responded to the scene regarding an anonymous call about a suspicious vehicle. OCSD requested the Orange County Fire Authority respond, who pronounced Stenger dead at the scene.

The OCDA is continuing to investigate the cause of Stenger's death. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to call supervising District Attorney Investigator Clint McCall at (714) 347-8814.

I remember this...he was an investigator with the department, and was able to access case information even up to the point where they issued his arrest warrant.
