It's not a dumb rule at all. My Dept was sued and settled a large sum in a private law suit from a spouse who said, the dept, should have had a wellness program. Her husband was overweight and as he attempted to chase a suspect he collapsed and died. He had heart blockage as a result of obesity and all the unhealthy aspects that came with it. They said the dept beared some responsibility because if the job requirements were that you may have to exert energy and fight suspects and run after suspects then the dept should have been monitoring and assisting with physical fitness.
My dept has now enacted a wellness program. They pay for your gym membership. Offer you a subscription to anytime fitness so you can go 24-7, they have given us access to nutritionist and personal trainers. They have sent guys to that cooper place in Dallas Texas to train and learn the cooper standards for fitness, to help us set up a program. If you don't pass small test which says you are able to take your bi-annual physical fitness test then you MUST see a doctor and get under doctors care to get your problem whatever it is under control. The Sheriff is paying for our health care 100%. They even built us a gym at the main office. Over the course of 4 yrs if you cannot pass the physical fitness AND wellness tests, basically a doctors physical you will be removed from patrol or terminated. This is in an effort to have a healthy force, and force guys to go to the doctor when problems arise so they don't cost the Sheriff more money in the long run in doctor bills, since the Sheriff is paying all of our insurance premiums. This program is also suppose to lower his premiums on us thereby insuring he is able to continue to pay 100% of our insurance premiums for us.
If you have gotten up in age and have legitimate health problems and you have been following the wellness program, as long as you are under a doctors care and a doctor says you can continue in patrol then your good, but you have to be proactive with your health or you'll be reassigned or if your a turd you'll be terminated. It's a good thing. The bottom line is if everyone atleasts tries to stay healthy and fit in this crazy economy and high cost health care, I don't have to worry about paying doctor bills, the sheriff will. I don't know about you, but I can't afford health care therefore I'll go to the doctor when I have a problem and I'll utilize the gym and professionals to keep myself healthy, it's good for me and saves me money.
Even our jail guys have to pass physical fitness tests. You cannot be hired unless you pass fitness tests and your at the right weight for your height. Exceptions made if your muscular, but not obese. If your obese, the bottom line is your a health risk and a financial risk to the dept. Why hire you when they are others out there who do not pose that risk? Don't blame them, they are a business and run like a business, and it's a business decision, nothing else.

there always a way around the weigh issue. um just fyi from what i have heard from some very close friends lasd well being going on a hiring freeze. they over hired by alot so if your going to make the trip lapd. but it all depends on what you want to do and work. the both have very very large areas to cover and many many assignments to choose from.

From the LASD Website:
"Applicants must be in good general physical
condition, free from any medical conditions that would interfere with the
satisfactory performance of the position of Deputy Sheriff Trainee. Although
there are no minimum or maximum height requirements, the height-weight
relationship of each applicant must either (1) fall within the ranges in the
following table or (2) if the applicant's height is not included on the table, be
found to be acceptable after individual evaluation. Height measurements are
made without shoes. Weight measurements are made without shoes and coat.
Applicants whose height falls between any of the measurements shown on the
table must meet the weight requirements of the lower height. Individuals who do
not meet the standard shall have their body fat measured. Female candidates
whose body fat is 33% or less may be qualified. Male candidates whose body fat
is 22% or less may be qualified."
So if you are in good shape, your body fat should fit within the range, right?

So is there any way aronud this dumb protocall?
I believe you get a chance around this "dumb protocol" in the form of a body fat test. Just a thought, instead of trying to find loopholes in the system, have you even tried shedding the excess weight?
The way around it is weight loss via hard work.

Really come on. Its not that hard to meet those standards. Its nominal physical fitness levels. You will be up against some real competetion at the academy. Some people enjoy working out, not squeaking by.

I am 5'9 230. Ex NCAA Athelete 23 years old. All I had to do was be under 21% for my physical on the body fat %. came in at 19%. They'll look at you and your body fat %. if you're fit you're fit.
Also hiring freeze with LASD??? I sure hope not. been cleared for hire since december. would hate to be caught up now!!! lol. koolaid, just run 5 miles a day...and do gassers and sprints...you will be just fine.

LASD is operating with a hiring slowdown rather than a hard freeze. The selection process is taking long. See my sig line. Also, and just as an FYI, the Bouman consent decree is still in effect... Check out the employment page at www.lasd.org for more details on it.

First off- unless you have less than 10% body fat, you are probably carrying too much weight for the academy( whether you realize it or not) .Take it from what its worth from a "older ,less fit" Officer( still able to get down and dirty if and WHEN I need too) walking around over 6'2", and having 22" biceps means nothing ,'cause out here LAPD and LASD both chase folks on foot like its an olympic sport( almost 99% of the CA agencies do as well). for LASD ,its based on their fixed hieght and weight charts, with LAPD, its based on body fat and the dreaded "girth" test they give this generations chili cheese fries eating / PS2 applicants( I think its the "coney dogs" for you in michigan)
You want it ? Do what you need to do - lose the weight and make the grade- the Depts won't bend to your will out here, and with the suggestion that you think you are in "good shape for being overweight", you will NOT make it through any of this states 22-28 wk academies......

Why are you thinking about leaving Michigan and coming to California?
Michigan "exports" (4) things :
1) Cars
2) Athletes
3) people that NEED a job.
4)People who have SURVIVED Flint and Detroit.....

all that matters is getting in and falling below the limits allowed...height/weight or %. that's it. test doesn't take into account muscle mass, which is a true gauge of health. for my height and weight i am considered "Morbidly obese." never mind running 8 miles a day and running a 4.8 forty. But like I said when it comes down to it...if any department tells you they want you a certain height who the eff cares what you idea of "fit" is. it's not your rules that should be followed, it's the departments. and besides as long as you're not anorexic you can stand to lose weight. it'll only make you feel better. running around at 230 , i know for a fact, doesn't feel as good as running around at 190..

.....same thing happened to a recruit for LAXPD- he actually got pneumonia and a kidney infection, going from 6'2", 235lbs to 180 lbs! The academy will slowly beat you up( the continued PT and tactics training) and the smallest injury will only be amplified if you aren't careful. you have the right attitude- do what it takes to get hired! Good luck on your process with LAPD and South Gate PD( or is it San Gabriel PD ??)

Just a bit of advice. On my first hight/weight I was labeled overweight even though I was 6'2" 246lbs, 23% bodyfat and built like a line backer. I wanted job so bad that this is the program I used for 2 months:
Every 4 hours I ate 1 can tuna, 1 cup lettuce, 4 chopped olives, 2 teaspoon balsamic vinagrette. Drink only water.Thats it, every 4 hours for 2 months.
I then every day except Sunday did the following physical training:
10 minute light jog for warm up, stretches, supersetted the following back to back for 1 set rested and repeated for total of seven sets:Wide pull-ups, close pull-ups, dips, push-ups, sit-ups, leg lifts, ab wheel (or kneel and walk out on hands till lying prone and walk back to kneeling position). After seven sets run three miles trying to push it faster each time.
two months later I was 17% bodyfat and weighed 230 pounds.
It sucks, you will be starving all the time, but you will cut bodyfat, retain muscle and meet the goal to get hired.
Best of luck.

Yes. You will be assigned to Custody/Corrections, Courts, or Transportation, prior to going 10-8.
It's no fun, but it pays off in the long run. The knowledge you gain, the command presence that is fine tuned, UOF experience, and all the funky viruses/bacteria you ingest, will make you a better Deputy AND boost your immune system....that, or will force you to volunteer your body to science.
