Just wondering if anyone has any information as to when the SFPD might start hiring again. Im currently in the background investigation stage but since the economy has tanked everything has stopped. My background investigator says he has not heard anything positive but did mention that they need people due to the amount of people retiring - about 200+ per year.

Just curious if anyone has heard anything else out there.
Thanks

The new fiscal year starts on July 01st, we'll have a better idea then. The number crunchers are still cutting money from every department's budget. It's a large bureaucracy run by incompetents, expect delays.

Everyone has to go through the academy, even former California officers, right? How long is the academy and what was your experience there?

It used to be that everyone was required to attend our academy, not anymore, we are accepting qualified laterals with 2 years of full time patrol experience. You have to be currently employed.

CA Cop,

Would you happen to know if SFPD will be extending the eligibility lists that are about to expire starting in April? I am currently an applicant in the SFPD hiring pool. My BI has told me that I have been waiting for an academy class since summer of 2008. My eligibility list is about to expire in a few months and I would like to know if my list will be extended or if I will have to restart the entire application process if I don't make it to a class by the time my list expires? Any help you can provide regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated.

They are not extending the list at all. I am in the same boat and just talked to my BI. He told me come January (for me), I will have to re-apply. He did say the second time through is MUCH quicker though.

Flatty,

Thank you for the reply. Do you happen to remember when you heard this from your BI? Also did your BI mention why all the E126 lists would not be extended?

I am 126-10 and he told me that come January I would have to start the whole process over again. No reason why other than policy. This is the way SFPD does it, and there is no way around it. He did say that if I re-applied, the process would be much quicker the next time around. I figure if need be, I would just apply again and see where it takes me. Who knows, once the new fiscal year starts, the academy may be soon thereafter. I have a buddy that started the academy back in January, so they should be gearing up for another one come July time.

So if guys in 126 are not any where near getting hired, im guessing since im 127 it would be even worse?

flatty,

Thanks for the info. I'm on list 126-8 and my BI told me my list expires in October. Hopefully SF will recieve some money as part of the stimulus package to put on some more classes.

Since you are on a newer list, you are actually in a better position than those of us who are on the E126 lists that are about expire. Once our list expires we lose our place in the hiring pool and have to start from the beginning again, which means those right behind us will move to the front of the line. Basically, you would gain from our misfortune.

This is not entirely accurate. After each group gets into the hiring pool, the whole list gets "renewed." This means that new people move in and others get shuffled around so that the "best" qualified people are at the top of the list. There is no Front of the line per se.

Flatty, thanks for the correction. That is actually what I meant to to say but it was quite late when I wrote that. Either way though, once our list expires, his chances of getting hired increase due to the fact that there are less of us in the pool competing for a spot in a class.
