Does anyone know of any departments that are hiring or at least testing? I have been testing in the Phoenix AZ area but nobody is hiring or if they are they hire 2, and 600 people apply. Any information or insight is greatly appreciated.

that's not accurate. Always verify on the departments website.

What I usually suggest when people ask that question (for CA anyway) is to go to the POST Agency List (http://post.ca.gov/Resources/Law_Enforcement_Links/agency_page.asp) and look up agencies one by one. It will take a while, but if you're willing to put in the time, you can find agencies that are hiring but might not be advertising it. Just a suggestion.

Can be very time consuming, but it's very effective.

East Bay Parks...
I've been getting stalled by them for months now... HR told me they're building a list at the moment and to not expect anything solid for a while. You can always apply and throw your name in the pile though...

well if that's truly the case i hate going out for interviews, taking my time away from the academy, when these departments know they don't have any spots, and have people already on their lists

I don't think it's a lack of positions so much as a lack of $$$. The positions are there. Agencies just can't fill them.

Well, to those of us in the process, it's six of one, half dozen of another. :(

I went onto Wikipedia to get a list of counties in Southern California, I then searched the web for Sheriffs Departments of these counties. I then looked at larger cities, that may have their own local PD, then searched for these PD websites. It took me quite a while (probably most of an afternoon), but I found more than a few who were hiring, even if they weren't advertising on billboards.

Copp'rPenny made me feel self-conscious about listing my agencies
Copp'rPenny's now making your feel self-conscious about how LONG your signature is! :D

Here's what I use to do: go to the county and city HR/Personnel department websites for who is hiring. The PD and SO's don't hire anyone-- the bean counters at HR do. Their website are the up to date ones...
Here are all the official city and county websites:

Some agencies are still hiring you just have to do the "leg work". Many are waiting until the new fiscal year. I hate to say this, but the reality is Oakland had people quit after the murders of the 4 officers. It takes a special kind of person...
