Anyoen here or anyone know any of them? I work on the water and we were all talking about what type of MMD (Merchant Mariner Documentation) they have or are required to have. It actually turned into a debate. But no one knew the answer, not even the cops we work with. If anyone knows anyone in that unit just ask what type of license they have. I doubt there are any of them on here.

I know a few guys in Harbor, most were at one time were commercial fisherman. Some have what is called a six pack license, whatever that is. It's cold in the winter, in the spring you troll for floaters.

harbour sounds like a great unit to get into.. what are some of the major duties they have to fulfill daily? how would you even branch into that, the same as any detail ?

It's harder to get into harbor than it is to get into the Navy Seals. I think that's the only unit on the job where a hook will NOT mean a guaranteed admission.

Was that a joke as in 6 pack of beer? I wasn't sure. If you were being serious, I have never heard of that type of license and I have, on and off, worked on the water my whole life.

I can count on my hand the number of times I've been in a boat. I have a friend retire who ran/piloted fishing charters. Maybe it has to do with the number of motors his boat has (it was a big one) or the number of people he could have on board. Otherwise I'm allergic to fish, so search me.

No they don't go by that. It goes by the weight of the ship.

A USCG 6 pack license is a license to operate a vessel capable of carrying 6 passengers (an uninspected charter fishing boat, for example).

Look at that. Thanks man. I can't believe I never heard of that.

Just out of curiosity...how does someone become on a specialized unit, whether its Emergency Services, Domestic Violence, Gang Division, Yankee and Shea Stadium Detail, Special Victims, Transit, or anything else....and don't say you need a hook....can't be true in every situation.

Emergency Services - When they have an opening they advertise, you try out and interview and wait and see (hook helps not necessary)

Domestic Violence - This is precinct based, anyone can get into there. Its a small unit within the precinct, most precincts DV unit has a rotating door so you can get in there fairly easily if it interests you

Gang Division - When they have an opening you apply. Your arrest record and sick record plays a big part. Like always a hook helps not necessary though

Yankee Stadium - Usually opened up to all Bronx Patrol Precincts. Any officer can apply, its fairly easy to get into. When the baseball season is over you go back to your precinct and apply next season if you want to go back. Fairly easy to get into but depending on how much time you have on the job will make the difference.

Shea Stadium - I'm not sure as I work in the Bronx but I'm sure its the same as Yankee stadium except its only available to Queens Patrol Precincts.

Special Victims - You apply to the unit. It is a detective shield route so you can become a detective by working in this unit. Your arrest record, sick record, and on the job experience will play a big part.

Transit - this is not a detail, you can't put in for transit. You get assigned to Housing, Patrol, or Transit out of the academy. It is almost impossible to get out of one once assigned unless you get promoted.

Hope that helps

Anyone know what most of the Aviation guys did before transferring there? I would love to do Transit and then put in for Aviation (I already have commercial pilots license) but based from the last post that sounds like a bad idea.

Were most of them on Patrol before moving over?

[Thinking I should maybe start a new thread]

I know of personally one guy who went from Patrol to Aviation as a Helicopter Pilot. He worked patrol and on his time off he put himself through pilot school and after many years obtained his helicopters pilot license. He then got into aviation fairly quickly (he did a fly over at our precinct the first day he was up in the air, was pretty neat). He also knew people at aviation, when he was a cadet or auxillary I forget which, he worked at aviation for a few years and from the time he was there he knew all the guys and most importantly all the bosses. I'm sure this helped and was a deciding factor. A commercial pilots license is good but I'm pretty sure you would need your helicopters license. I do not believe NYPD will put you through the school to get your helicopter license/certification but I do not know that as a fact
