Anyone know what their current status is? I've seen a few articles that they are hurting for law enforcement throughout the whole state. Anyone know how true this is?

While the staties are def looking to hire more folks because of retirements and what not don't count on an academy running anytime soon because of the absolute toolbag of a Gov. we have here in MA

Plus they haven't hired in about 7 years and they are expecting a record turn out for this test. Plus almost everyone who wants to be a cop in this state wants to be a trooper, even officers who are already certified. Tons of competition.

competition isn't always so bad, but good luck none the less!

The state budget is a mess, there wont be another academy class for atleast another 2-3 years. The last test was in 2001. This test was nothing but a money maker for the state.

Hopefully, they will get the budget in order. We can never have enough cops.

The last test for the MSP only was in 2002 and 3 classes of about 450 total were hired. The last Civil Service test in April 09 was combined with the Trooper exam with approximately 20,000 test takers. Of that group it's unknown how many checked "Trooper" as one of their options, but it's safe to say that most probably did.

The MSP is about 250 short of its typical manning numbers, and retirements are coming fast. Almost 980 are eligible to retire with benefits at the drop of a dime, and of those about 450 have over 25 years. It's an old force but the budget mess in the commonwealth is completely bullocks. Keep your eye on the state budget after July 1st to see if any layoffs will be coming, never mind a new class from the new test. No money was appropriated for MSP classes in the budget proposal FY 2010.

Anyone who's an aspiring police officer/trooper candidate in Mass seriously needs to have their head examined and placed into a straight jacket. I don't care what someone's family, housing, or other commitments are that they need to stay in MA, but if they really want to be a LEO they need to go where the jobs are...and they aren’t in MA.

Sinepari is right, I am currently on the laid-off list here in this great commonwealth! Look elsewhere, our gov. is not the greatest, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere. I have applied to other states, I hope I can get the opportunity to move.

check out NH in the next year or so- our budget isn't the best at this time (as with other states), but I see NHSP and other local agencies getting it MORE together in the next year or two years.

MA is just such a big animal that I think (looking at this from an outside perspective and a previous resident of MA) it is going to take a little longer than 2 years.

Than again, some last minute grants may kick in...who knows!

Unless you are in one of the wealthy towns, hiring will be sporadic at best in this budget cycle. As much as I disagree with all of this stimulus business, that may be the only hope for anyone being hired this year in Massachusetts.

I understand nation wide there is $3 billion in requests for for $1 billion in CopsFAST grants.

Go state if you can...

The Governor just signed a new bill that changes the retirement for us locals. The state somehow is not affected.

The state cut the Quinn Bill which is extra pay for your education. The state is not affected. They dont have the "Quinn" bill so they keep their money.

The Governor screwed with our details. Again the State is not affected because all of their roadways have speed limits which prohibit the use of flagmen.

The pay is much better and it would appear that there is some insulation against the cuts that are affecting us at the local level.

That said the state budget is a mess and they probably arent hiring for a while.

The state is in bad shape, layoffs, Revere Worcester & Danvers. It’s bad. It will be several years before any hiring’s happen. The layoff list needs to be taken care of first. The Quinn bill is also gone. Thanks Governor

The state is not "insulated" from affected cuts. Perhaps you should see if your union reps actually worked in the halls of Beacon Hill daily during legislative sessions regarding police budget cuts. Or ask them if they even know where Beacon Hill is.

Each time there is an ax falling on any police pay, SPAM is in the halls making headway on behalf of all law enforcement in the state, others are no where to be found. Ask your reps what they were doing those days the votes came in before eluding to some conspiracy theory here.

Does anyone know anything about Boston? I'm from Maryland so I'm unfamiliar with the geography, is there anywhere within like 70 miles of Boston hiring?

Does anyone know anything about Boston? I'm from Maryland so I'm unfamiliar with the geography, is there anywhere within like 70 miles of Boston hiring? To be blunt..no..furthermore most of the departments in that radius are civil service which means you will have to wait for the next exam when it's offered in 2011...and you'll only get a shot if you pretty much live in the city or town you've selected as one of your employment choices and lets not forget about any officers on the layoff list that will be given priority over any new hire, and then we have all the military folks that get preference as well...so I would say look back in Maryland or if your stuck in this area then look at southern NH or RI....personally soon as the economy starts to rebound I'm outta this Sh*thole state

I cannot speak for everyone but I had that advice a long time ago prior to getting out of the Navy.I left 7 years ago and took a job in Virginia.Being a vet does not mean squat or how high you score on the exam. Its who you know there

It's not who you know, just gotta score high enough. When you have 20,000 people taking an exam for a hundred slots...do the math. In VA many departments have a continuous recruiting cycle for attrition. Not so in MA.

The reason I'm asking is because my girlfriend might be going to grad school in Boston, definitely doesn't seem like an ideal area for employment based on the responses. What are the names of some places in NH and RI (or Vermont)? It's a little trouble trying to find places with departments in regions that are a reasonable commute having been to the region all of one time in my life for two days

quick question can troopers from Florida transfer to Massachusetts or do they have to do the academy all over again

Sgt Jack
11-14-2009, 02:59 PM
Pretty much if you were applying to be a Trooper here you will have to do the whole academy over again...as far as cities and towns go they may and I mean MAY...take your academy....that would be up to the MPTC aka the Municipal Police Training Committee..I do know of one officer from Florida that works for a smaller town here and they took his academy although I had heard they weren't crazy about doing it. Mass is one of those wonderful places that doesn't like to recognize anyone's training even if its from here...its also most likely the hardest state to become a police officer in..search some posts and you'll learn why..good luck
