Hello everyone,
My fiance got hired in feb. with ICE specifically with DRO IEA. He applied to Baltimore and they ended up putting him in San Diego. His family is in MD and can not go to San Diego due to custody restrictions. Everyone he talks to basically is giving him the run around on how to get a transfer done. We know its possible and that people do it all the time but how???!!!! We are both getting so frustrated and this is causing alot of stress in our relationship. Who do we contact? He is in FLETC right now until the end of June and is an alumni of the citadel. Please if you know of how this is done write me. Thank you in advance for any information that you can provide.

My best advice for you is to let him concentrate on his studies and passing the academy. He's already got a lot on his plate there in GA and the last thing he needs to be having is drama at home where he cant be. Have you tried calling the San Diego Field Office?
Its too bad you guys cant come out here to San Diego....its Beautiful!

Sorry to burst your bubble, but they should have told him as soon as he signed up that he could potentially go anywhere in the country. Look into a hardship transfer.

I am trying very hard to be as supportive as possible. Thanks for the advice! I do believe he has tried calling San Diego. I know he had to report out there before he went to GA.
I heard about the hardship request from someone else as well. Is it better for him to fill it out after he is done the academy and back in San Diego?

Got some bad news for you...
It will be VERY hard to get a hardship transfer. He accepted the job in SD, so he is there for the duration.
Your best bet is from him to use his Citadel connections (My brother went there) and try to contact a Congressman. The Agency will be of no help. AFter three years, he can put in for a transfer. Or, he can wait for the next public announcement and apply that way to get home...
It will be a tough road, not impossible, but close to it.
It is going to take a number of years for him to to transfer. Why did he accept the offer if he could not move? ICE tells you up front what region you are going to be stationed. He can either quit or go to SD. I don't see him getting a transfer any time soon unless he has a MAJOR hook.

I spoke to 3 ICE agents today at work. One of them told me she had a classmate in the academy actually get a transfer ok'd WHILE in the academy. because of the legal child issues. They all advised me that it would be hard but not entirely impossible.

Hello everyone, since this is the topic on the thread about changing your geo areas: I'm in the very beginning of the process with my application. Just registered yesterday, my test is coming up on June 1st. I already selected Miami FO - I'm actually considering between Georgia or San Diego. Later in the process - are we able to change geo preference before finalizing our offer?
Thank you.

You can switch your geo pref BEFORE you get a conditional offer. Once you get that, the offer is for a specific region.

For IEA it is by region. GA would be in the southeast region with NC and SC. San Diego would probably cover San Diego and Imperial counties. Maybe Orange and Riverside as well be I am not sure. You might want to stay with So Florida. If you come to SD with IEA you will be broke. Topping out at GS9, even with AUO and sunday/night diff pay, is hard living for SD county. You could live well in the southeast region on IEA pay except in atlanta and even there you would not be broke the way you would be in SoCal.
