While my main hope is to get into a department here in CT or somewhere in the general Northeast U.S., I'm not completely opposed to going out to CA if that's what it takes to get a police job. I was looking at the LAPD and LASD; the thing is, do either of them have any tests in my neck of the woods? I don't see flying out to LA for a one hour written and twenty minute oral as a viable option. Anything for these departments within reasonable driving distance of Northeast CT?

They have a compressed testing schedule where you stay for 3 or 4 days and get half the process done. Call them and find out.

I would call very very soon. I heard LAPD is stopping their expedited testing in April. you only have to make two trips to LA for it and then the 3rd would be for your academy.

LAPD has stopped their expedited testing. and unless you are female dont even try to get hired by LASD. they only have one academy scheduled for this year.

The female thing is true about LASD. Hopefully it doesn't last long. However, I think there are more than 1 academy for the year.

Only one currently planned. Unsure when it will be or how many to follow.

Class 377 started monday and COC, and there is another at STARS later this year.

VT State, NH State, Burlington VT, CT State, NYPD, are all hiring.

Check out Masscops forum for more info.

But...if you want to head out west, go for it. Better pay, weather, and lots of east coast peeps.

CHP, LAPD, and Vegas Metro all still looking for people.

Or...you can come here to DC metro, MDSP/MPDC/Balt City are all looking for people and the process is 3-4 months. www.mdsp.org http://dcpolice.jobs/ http://www.baltimorepolice.org/join-the-team/become-an-officer/out-of-state-applicants

MDSP and Bmore offer 4 day out of town processes, it's the whole process, no BS. Also, lots of 0083 federal gigs are hiring like USSS-UD/USCP/US Park...etc

Not as interested in becoming a trooper, but I figure I'll put in an app at least to CT State. At some point, I also want to get down to NY and take an NYPD test.

I missed the civil service exam, and they only give it once a year...sucks big time.

Pay: Good, weather: Never an issue. I'm a go-take-out-the-trash-barefoot-in-minus 10-degree-weather New Englander :D; would miss my family (though I do have a cousin out there who would gladly welcome me).

LAPD

Called them today. In another 3-4 weeks they start the expiated (sp?) testing again, so I might give that a go.

Vegas Metro.

I hear that's a pretty top-notch department! That might be on my list.

My uncle (father of my cousin in CA) lives outside of DC and works for Congress (I dunno what he does, but I don't think he's to blame for all these problems :D). Either Metro or Baltimore might be a place to look.

Thanks, UOB! That's a hell of a lot of good info!

NYPD is not doing much hiring now due to the economy. You should seriously consider Vegas metro. Very good department, good pay, OT, benefits, retirement, cheap cost of living, 4/10 work week and no state tax. If it was not in vegas I'd be there already.

You got NLVPD in Vegas as well, little bit smaller department but pay about the same, and better uniforms I think ;)

I called LASD yesterday to sign up for their Out of Area written exam, and they are no longer doing that. The recruiter said they need to update the website.
